iiTzChunky Posted April 21, 2017 Posted April 21, 2017 I have several decent sized lakes around me, and a bunch of ponds I can fish. Being stuck on land makes me shy away from the lakes. They're just to big for me to walk around and fish thoroughly. Is it just me or does everyone else prefer a pond when bank fishing. Just a random thought I had today while bank fishing around some random ponds. Quote
Outdoor Zack Posted April 21, 2017 Posted April 21, 2017 Anywhere I can access and still be able to get some decent fishing in. For example, if I can find a long stretch of rip rap on a lake,I'd rather fish there than at the boat ramp on a pond. Quote

I just don't care for the lakes around me, I live in a country area and everyone and their mama fishes these lakes. The CO has specifically asked me, that if I hook a big bass that I take her out, it's eating their sunfish and bluegill population up. My response wasn't one he was expecting I guess, I told him to put more in and fatten up the rest of the bass. Because I was gonna throw it back in if I got it. So basically all the bass in the lake are small with a few very rare exceptions. I get bigger bass out of a pond. 1 Quote
Clackincrank53 Posted April 21, 2017 Posted April 21, 2017 I like fishing from the bank as much as from my boat and it doesn't matter to me if it's a lake or pond but if I wanna catch a big bass which around here is anything over 4lbs I hit a few ponds I know where the chances are good I can do that regularly, there's only 1 lake near me where that's possible on a regular basis... Super User JustJames Posted April 21, 2017 Super User Posted April 21, 2017 I find it harder to bank fish from big lake/reservoir than a small pond/lake. But here in socal it tough to find a good small lake unless you live in private community with madmade lake. All city park lakes here there are many who fish and take home legal or illegal. with all that said, I also feel bass in big body of water fight harder than small pond. Quote
Super User Team9nine Posted April 21, 2017 Super User Posted April 21, 2017 Just you I like the big lakes just fine. The key is don't try and walk the whole thing and fish it all. Break it down into smaller sections or stretches. 2 Quote
LBASS01 Posted April 21, 2017 Posted April 21, 2017 It's much harder to bank fish on a lake because I feel limited in the area I can fish. I much prefer ponds when bank fishing. I suggest an affordable kayak so you can get the best of both worlds. Quote
Super User J Francho Posted April 21, 2017 Super User Posted April 21, 2017 Doesn't a pond limit you to the areas you can fish? I mean, do you really think that most of the bass are out of reach from shore? Quote
Hawkeye21 Posted April 21, 2017 Posted April 21, 2017 Get yourself a kayak and then you don't have to worry. You can fish any shoreline you'd like. Quote

Which I don't mind fishing for 2 hours but talking for an hr to fish is pushing it for me. Quote
Super User Fishes in trees Posted April 21, 2017 Super User Posted April 21, 2017 I think that ponds are a little more manageable, easier to get your head around and figure out where the fish are, if you're bank bound. Since I bought my current boat, (2002) I don't fish ponds anymore, because I feel that pond fishing gives me bad habits. What times on drop baits, angles for cranks & suck are different, for me pond fishing is just more trouble than it is worth - and I have access to several very good private ponds. Plus - as I get older I'm not a fan of bank walking on unsteady rocks & mud, not a fan of shore line vegetation interfering with my casting and I'm not a fan of the extra bugs. Ever kick over a nesting goods that you didn't see? Not good, it hurts and the goose gets hurt also. Ever set your gear down and after the fact find out that you set it down next to a snake? I don't have those issues when fishing out of a boat. I have different issues when boat fishing, like fish location, boat control and competence issues. Quote
jr231 Posted April 21, 2017 Posted April 21, 2017 It's funny cuz when I see people bank fishing lakes... They cast out as far as then can... And then I see people in boats casting towards the bank lol Ohio's state record came from a pond. As did my PB. When you have a truly secluded , sizable private pond it is a real treat... Love pond fishing and have access to more than a few that are private. I always like the mystery of lake fishing though. Maybe I'll catch a walleye or pike or catfish . You just never know and I like that about lakes. I also like being on the water... It's more pleasurable to me than bank fishing... They both have pros and cons. If I could only pick one I would choose lake fishing but I am very grateful for ponds because of my tight schedule Quote
nascar2428 Posted April 21, 2017 Posted April 21, 2017 I love the challenge of a lake. All of my biggest fish have come from shore fishing at lakes. Ponds are fun and productive, but a lot easier to catch fish on and cover a lot of water. I agree with team9nine, you break down the lake into fish able areas and fish it thoroughly. Quote
Super User J Francho Posted April 21, 2017 Super User Posted April 21, 2017 I fish Lake Ontario from shore. My favorite spot near my house is only a few dozen yards of shore. Always plenty of fish to be caught. I guess I don't understand the walking the whole shoreline part. Stick to key fish attracting structure and cover. Same goes for ponds. I have a few that would take maybe ten minutes to walk around. I only really fish a few prime spots. Quote
RMax Posted April 21, 2017 Posted April 21, 2017 I'm a bank fisherman and I absolutely hate fishing ponds. With ponds, you are restricted in that you know almost the whole lake within two outings and know what they fish bite. You don't learn as much, have as much mobility, and usually the fish aren't as big. I like lakes because you never know what the conditions are going to be like. One day it could be stained and calm, the next muddy and windy. Quote

The coves that I would like to fish are a 3 30-45 min walk around to either of the no matter what side I start on. It just seems like such a huge hassle to possibly get skunked if their in another part of the lake. Quote

I get what your saying, but if you really think the spot has potential, you owe to yourself to fish it. Getting skunked is always a part of the deal. Quote
