IndianaFinesse Posted April 20, 2017 Posted April 20, 2017 This weekend I'm fishing a tournaments in a predominantly smallmouth lake (brookville), and was wondering if the vision 110 is to big for them. Would smaller jerkbaits such as the pointer 78 be more appropriate, or is the 110's size fine? I have not had the opportunity to fish for smallies much, so the only thing I know about them is from research. Quote
punch Posted April 20, 2017 Posted April 20, 2017 YES! The 110 is perfect for smallies. In fact it's one of the best multi-species baits i've ever thrown. Bass, walleye, pike.. everyone will eat it. Didn't Scott Martain basically win his recent FLW event tossing around a 110 for smallies? 2 Quote
Super User fishballer06 Posted April 20, 2017 Super User Posted April 20, 2017 Throw both sizes and see what works best for you. I've seen smallmouth bite on the Pointer 128's, so it's really a matter of what the fish want to bite on. 4 Quote
Super User Dwight Hottle Posted April 20, 2017 Super User Posted April 20, 2017 Don't just limit yourself to small baits. Smallies love slender pointer 127's & pointer 128's, both bigger baits up to 1oz. 3 Quote
38 Super Fan Posted April 20, 2017 Posted April 20, 2017 Works great on them here in my area, my go to lure in fact. 1 Quote

IndianaFinesse Posted April 20, 2017 Author Posted April 20, 2017 Thanks for the replies. Sounds like the smallies like it as much as the green fish do. Quote
Burntorangefan Posted April 21, 2017 Posted April 21, 2017 Smallies are aggressive buggers. As everyone else said, they're quite fond of 110s. 1 Quote
Super User everythingthatswims Posted April 21, 2017 Super User Posted April 21, 2017 Yeah they'll eat a 110. There isn't a 110 in this picture because everyone else in the tournament was throwing a swimbait and I wanted them to continue doing so. 8 Quote

Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted April 22, 2017 Global Moderator Posted April 22, 2017 A French Pearl 110 is a killer smallmouth bait for me, but this one ate a Pro Blue 110. 6 Quote
Turkey sandwich Posted April 22, 2017 Posted April 22, 2017 Man, it's such an incredible misnomer that smallies only strike small baits. While there are times that may be true, generally, they're aggressive fish and willing strike whatever mimics the forage. I can't tell you how many I've caught on Super Spooks, 3/4 oz 4 blade spinnerbaits with trailers, bladed jigs with 5"+ swim bait trailers, etc. Getting it to look similar enough to the forage isn't typically that hard with smallmouth. It's usually just a matter of finding the active fish. Bigger baits give a much bigger profile, and I think, that alone can make them better search baits at times. 2 Quote
PatrickKnight Posted April 22, 2017 Posted April 22, 2017 Last year I caught a 5 inch smallmouth throwing a 5 inch curly tail and several 5-6 inch fish on 4-5 inch swim baits. Big fish in general like to get the most bang for the buck when it come to feeding, then factor in the natural aggressiveness of the smallmouth and its a win win for larger baits imo. 1 Quote

jr231 Posted May 9, 2017 Posted May 9, 2017 You could get an x-rap, x-rap countdown, x-rap shallow shad and a skitter walk for the price of one of those 110's... But by all means.. spend your money. I think if megabass was the 6-7 dollar lure and rapala was the 26 dollar then people would rave about them more... They all catch fish ! 2 Quote

Super User Munkin Posted May 22, 2017 Super User Posted May 22, 2017 SM are aggressive and will hit larger baits than you think. I have caught 6" SM on a 110mm jerkbait before so go ahead and try them. Allen 1 Quote

I already own a vision 110, I was just asking last month if they were on the big side for smallies (i hadn't had a chance to fish for smallmouth much before the tournament, there aren't any smallmouth lakes neareby) I also have an x-rap, which is great for fishing shallower and warmer water, but the vision goes a few feet deeper and has a different action that works better at times IMHO. 1 Quote

So we didn't end up getting to fish that tournament, because of our numerous motor problems, but i would like to go back there just to fun fish sometime. Quote

anderb54 Posted June 12, 2017 Posted June 12, 2017 Smallies seem to love my Jointed Claw 178, so a Vision 110 will be fine . That said, I've had better luck on the Ito Shiner than the Vision 110, so that may be another one to consider. Elegy Bone or Ito Natural ftw Quote

Mokujon Posted August 4, 2017 Posted August 4, 2017 If I'm not throwing my 110 I have a size 08 X-Rap on and it gets crushed. Quote
