I have a spinning reel that developed a very bad binding issue for one weekend. (Less than a year old, not cheap and not Shimano.)

It wasn't submerged and temps were 50's to 70's.  Handle was binding nearly every cast; a fairly forceful nudge was required to move the handle.  I took it out to work on it last night and problem is gone.  Basic look-around (take off spool, handle, etc.) reveals nothing.

I had a Symetre that exhibited similar symptoms - though never quite as bad as this one did.  I've never heard of any other reels acting like this.

Any similar experiences or suggestions?

I am going to guess a piece of unwanted metal shaving, dirt etc probably from manufacturing.  I am guessing. I would take it apart and inspect, clean, and relube it.  If you are concerned send it out to DVT.  Personally I would have that done by someone and not just assume it will never come back.  If it comes back the damage might be a set of gears next time.  A clean and regrease is not that expensive.  You could also check with a local tackle shop and see if they work on reels. I have a shop that will tear down, and if all is good, clean, reassemble and lube for around $20 to $30 or less, depending on the reel.  You said it was not a cheap reel so I would have it done for peace of mind.

DVT thanks for your support here on this site.  Sometimes a set of eyeballs, a cleaning and a general service will keep those gremlins away.  Far cheaper than risking a total failure of a favorite reel.

I neglected to follow up...

(I realize this is an old thread, but it is MY old thread, so I feel entitled.....)

I thought about this over the weekend while I was cleaning spinning reels, because I had another reel, of different manufacturer, with the same problem:

Both reels had a small piece of plastic broken inside.  I'm not sure how to accurately describe the piece....The plastic piece fits over small threaded shaft extending inside from the cap/screw opposite the handle.  The cap (opposite the handle) has a short shaft (3/4"?) and on that shaft is a square (black in both cases) plastic piece that sets into the main shaft 'hole'.   That small piece still functions on both reels, but had chips broken off of them.  No idea why....I don't believe in coincidences, so either its a common, manufactured weakness, or I'm somehow abusing and breaking my reels.

I have had shimanos bind up when the friction ring has broken into pieces and the piece gets wedged between the rotor and the spool body. the older shimanos were famous for this. I believe the newer ones all have had this issue remedied. none of my newer ones have ever bound up.

sounds like something similar on your reel?

I've had exactly the same thing happen on two different spinning reels. Both were relatively inexpensive reels, one Mitchell Avocet and one Okuma Avenger. Out of curiousity, I disassembled another Okuma reel of a different size, same model, as the one with the problem and sure enough, that little plastic collar had some "flashing" on the end that goes into the reel body. I trimmed it up with an X-acto knife and it's never given me any problems.

You'd think that even the most rudimentary QC inspection would've caught this.

No kidding.  I had another, different problem on a second spinning reel (MSRP >$150) in which one of the screws on the bail came out while fishing...along with the line roller and a washer.  First season with the reel and parts were flying all over the place.

Daiwa.  You have to be VERY careful that this gets seated properly.
