Super User ChrisD46 Posted April 19, 2017 Super User Posted April 19, 2017 I tried braid main line for spinner baits and swim jigs - but lose fish due to early hook sets . The slight stretch that mono , copoly or perhaps FC line have (as compared to braid) may help me get better hook sets due to the delay / stretch with these reaction style baits ... What is your favorite line and # pound test you use for spinner baits and swim jigs on a bait caster? Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted April 19, 2017 Global Moderator Posted April 19, 2017 I use braid for swim jigs, so can't comment on that. I use either 15lb Big Game or 15lb Pline CXX for spinnerbaits. If the cover is really heavy I might step up to 17 or 20 pound though. Quote
smr913 Posted April 19, 2017 Posted April 19, 2017 x2 with @Bluebasser86. For wood or open water I would use 15# Big Game. Quote
moguy1973 Posted April 19, 2017 Posted April 19, 2017 I use 10-12lb P-Line CX Premium. It's a lot more pliable than the CXX and still very strong. Quote
illinifan4152 Posted April 19, 2017 Posted April 19, 2017 15-17lb McCoys Mean Green/Xtra clear Co-Polly for me. Quote
Super User RoLo Posted April 19, 2017 Super User Posted April 19, 2017 I can't help you because I only use straight braid for spinnerbaits. You're going to lose the occasional bass no matter which line material you use. You might try adding a trailer hook and I'm pretty sure you'll find that bass virtually hook themselves on non-stretch braid I ain't changin nuttin Roger Quote
Damn Yankee Posted April 19, 2017 Posted April 19, 2017 12# Yo zuri hybrid preforms well for me. 2 Quote

Super User NHBull Posted April 19, 2017 Super User Posted April 19, 2017 10 lb braid with blue label.....The blue label stretches also loosen the drag a bit Quote
22hertz Posted April 19, 2017 Posted April 19, 2017 Im not going to say its the best or my favorite because I haven't tried everything on the market but I have been satisfied with Pline Floroclear 10lb especially at $8 for 300 yards. Quote
Delaware Valley Tackle Posted April 19, 2017 Posted April 19, 2017 Something I learned bed fishing is if a fish you can see can inhale, move and spit a bait faster than you can react and with out feeling it, no way are our reflexes so fast as to pull a bait away from a fish that truly wants it. If you're getting short strikes change color, size, retrieve or bait. It's not the line or rod action causing the problem. 6 Quote

Super User ChrisD46 Posted April 19, 2017 Author Super User Posted April 19, 2017 Good replies to date : I have Big Game #15 lb. , Stren #14 lb. , Yo Zuri Hybred #12 lb. and CXX #12 lb. & #17 lb. available locally - I believe (based on replies) these would be in the ball prk to try on top of cheap backing I have on couple of bait caster reels . *I mention the possible benefit to slight stretch for spinner baits (mono / copoly) based on comments from Jimmy Houston to: "Let bass have the spinnerbait for just a split second delay before setting the hook and you will catch more fish" ... Super User fishnkamp Posted April 19, 2017 Super User Posted April 19, 2017 I think you may be missing the biggest item. What rod are you using? Is the tip forgiving enough, many times a more moderate tipped rod will handle spinnerbaits, traps and such. A good example of that is the Falcon Buccoo Micro Trap Caster. It is a 7 foot rod with plenty of backbone, but a very forgiving tip to keep a bait from getting tossed. Try tossing those baits on a softer tipped rod. I use the same rod as I use for traps and jerkbaits. Quote
Cgrinder Posted April 19, 2017 Posted April 19, 2017 Depends on the hook of your jigs and wire of your spinnerbaits. 12 lb red label works. Quote

Super User ChrisD46 Posted April 20, 2017 Author Super User Posted April 20, 2017 OP here - for spinner baits and swim jigs up to 1/2 oz. I typically usea 6'10" M Fast baitcast rod . Quote
Super User MassYak85 Posted April 20, 2017 Super User Posted April 20, 2017 I usually fish brad but I'm also a fan of 16lb sunline sniper. Quote
