Bryant Blackmon Posted April 19, 2017 Posted April 19, 2017 Searching for a MH rod 6'8" or longer under 3 oz, would be interested in a custom built rod just not sure who to get it build by. Quote
Super User fishnkamp Posted April 19, 2017 Super User Posted April 19, 2017 I am curious why under 3 oz specifically? What deid you want to do with this rod and what reel did you think of mating it with. There are plenty of choices for a custom rod. Give DVT a call and discuss what you are actually looking for. I use a Powell Max 683CEF and love the rod. It is the most versatile rod in my arsenal. If you have time go read the review of the rod by Tackletour. Now they have upgraded the blank material and you would need to verify its weight compared to the older model, but Powell is terrific, I have spoken with the owner several times. The original rod weighed 3.7 ounces but they use a lighter rel seat setup so it may fit your needs. I know it fits mine. Super User fishnkamp Posted April 19, 2017 Super User Posted April 19, 2017 Forgive me, I know that reel is super crazy good but is it a reel that exceeds with super light baits? I am much more familiar with the standard Daiwa line like the SV series reels from Daiwa. 1 Quote

CroakHunter Posted April 19, 2017 Posted April 19, 2017 Im not fluent in how much rods weigh, but the 6'10 medium, denali kovert lite is the lightest rod ive ever help. Even as light as my 7'6 ultra light. 1 Quote
Super User fishnkamp Posted April 19, 2017 Super User Posted April 19, 2017 Call Powell tomorrow. Ask the rod weight on that 683CEF. Mine is perfect for that use, but it is amazing how much more that rod can do. As I said before Tackletour helped me to decide to try my first Powell. They were spot on in their review of it. They threw everything from a 1/4 ounce to a 2 1/2 ounce swimbait on it. It was only supposed to fish 1/4 to 36/4ounce baits, but it is just a perfect transition from tip to backbone. 1 Quote
RichF Posted April 19, 2017 Posted April 19, 2017 I'll probably get reamed but look at one of the site sponsors, Favorite Fishing. Their high end Summit rods claim to be under 3 oz for the action you're looking for. The price tag is pretty high though. Also take a look at the Shimano Zodias. I don't know the exact weight, but I have a 6'10" MH that's incredibly light. 1 Quote
CroakHunter Posted April 19, 2017 Posted April 19, 2017 Is there a website that lists rod weight? Ive lookes but no luck 1 Quote

Okuma lists the Helios 7' M at 3.5 oz. This is for the completed rod. No idea of blank weight. Love mine. Bought two. Walmart currently is asking $107.90 for this rod. A $72.09 savings. Free shipping to a store near you, but you have to pay tax. Jet has them for the same price. Free shipping, and I think no tax. 1 Quote

Super User rippin-lips Posted April 19, 2017 Super User Posted April 19, 2017 Custom built on a Phenix K2 blank. Matt from Otterrods is about the best in the business as far as custom rods go. 1 Quote
Delaware Valley Tackle Posted April 19, 2017 Posted April 19, 2017 I got your message and will get you some info shortly. For a rod of mh power sun 4oz finished weight is real light. 1 Quote
Super User WRB Posted April 19, 2017 Super User Posted April 19, 2017 Bass rods need enough strength or power to control the fish after hooking it, strength requires wall thickness and material adds weight, plus the length, 9 guides, reel seat, handle and butt cap all add weight. My custom ALX rods are 5 and 6 power, 6'10" long with a 2" fore grip and weigh 3.75 oz and 3.8 oz, less the fore grip would be about 3.5 oz. Any bass rod under 3.5 oz is extremely light weight and fragile. DVT can build the exact custom rod you want. Tom 1 Quote

Gold accents aren't too bad a match. 3.5 oz. rod, 5.6 oz. reel plus line. Don't have any idea what the line adds to the total weight, but should be around 10 oz. total. Nice! I recently acquired a Helios reel with green accents. That should match up perfectly with the other rod. Unfortunately it is one of the reels still in Florida. 1 Quote
Super User kickerfish1 Posted April 20, 2017 Super User Posted April 20, 2017 The Helius is one of the cheaper rods you will find that many consider to be light. There was also a Quantum Smoke rod that was really light as well but I believe it was an older rod. One of the members here has one or two but I can't recall if it is "QuakeandShake"? If you want with a red and black theme the discontinued Shimano Cumulus rods are what you want. The casting are available in 6'10 MH and 7'1 Heavy I believe. The 6'10 is right at 3oz and the 7'1 is right at 3.5. Check the review on TT for more info. I have the 6'10 and love it a lot for quite a few apps. It was widely considered the best rod Shimano had ever built ...side by side with Poison Adrenas for a rod available in the US rod. Another rod that might fit your bill is the Zbone rods from Kistler. They may have the weights listed on the website if not call them and they can provide the weights. They also feature red and black and some grey for colors. Any custom build will push your budget to the max. Like Ripp'n said the K2 will be about as light as you can find and the blank alone is over $200. Add in super light guides, a minimalist build, the builders labor and material costs, and shipping and I wouldn't be surprised if you clear $450-500 easily if not more. There are a bunch of rod weights posted on TackleTour under the rod section. It is a sticky thread at the top. 1 Quote
Super User JustJames Posted April 20, 2017 Super User Posted April 20, 2017 Daiwa tatula 6'10 MH/F weight at 3.7 oz. This might not as light as you want but very sensitive and price very good around. I have this rod pair with daiwa alphas 105 compare to my other fav shimano crucial 6'11 M/F pair with curado 70 and every time I switch the rod it feel like night and day. 1 Quote

JaxBasser Posted April 20, 2017 Posted April 20, 2017 The 6'9" Kistler KLX MH is 3.6 oz. I love the 7'3 MH I have and that rod even feels like it weighs nothing. They're great rods. 1 Quote
