NickMurray Posted April 17, 2017 Posted April 17, 2017 Can I use 50 pound for flipping and frogging? Also has anyone used bps xps braid? Quote
jr231 Posted April 17, 2017 Posted April 17, 2017 I tried some Cabela's brand braid and it was awful. The color faded and got all over my reel the first time using it. I wouldn't expect much more from the bps version but I can't say for sure. Power pro is the best value I've found. Yes you can go that heavy. Some people run 80lb for frogging and flippin Quote
Super User J Francho Posted April 17, 2017 Super User Posted April 17, 2017 I use 50 for general weedy cover. I up it to 65 for thick slop. Never tried the XPS brand line. Kazan, PowerPro, Tuf-Line, and KastKing SuperPower have all worked well for me. 1 Quote
Super User Angry John Posted April 17, 2017 Super User Posted April 17, 2017 your location is not filled in so your answers will be a guess to the level of cover you have. Up north in CT 50 LB was great and worked without a problem. Some people in south Florida are using 80. I have never broke 50lb so going heavier than that would not really help but you have to know your cover and what you feel comfortable with. 2 Quote
Super User J Francho Posted April 17, 2017 Super User Posted April 17, 2017 I've fished over the east coast from NY to FL, and could never make any correlation between location and "level of cover." SOme lakes are dense, some are not, others have all different ranges. 1 Quote
Global Moderator Mike L Posted April 17, 2017 Global Moderator Posted April 17, 2017 50# is fine for frogging...Depending on what you're flipping into 65# would be the minimum. Mike Quote
CTBassin860 Posted April 17, 2017 Posted April 17, 2017 I use 50# but depending on that slop,65# is a safe bet. Quote
Super User NHBull Posted April 18, 2017 Super User Posted April 18, 2017 In central NH, you really have to look hard to find heavy salad, so 50 would be fine, that said, I doubt I would ever see the need for 65. 50 is freaking rope! 1 Quote
Finnz922 Posted April 18, 2017 Posted April 18, 2017 I know guys that use 30 and 40. I wouldn't, but they have been for years when it comes to frogging and fishing heavy grass. Most of the issue lies in the knot you tie. I personally use 50lb and 65lb for frogging and 80lb for punching. Just my preference. I tie a polymar knot for frogging and a snell for punching and have been lucky so far and none of them have ever failed. 1 Quote
RichF Posted April 18, 2017 Posted April 18, 2017 50lb Sunline FX2 is my favorite braid. I use it for both flipping and frogging...and that's pretty much how I fish most of the time. I use 65 also but really don't think it's all that necessary. 1 Quote

That's seems to be the thinnest strongest most dependable braid in the market , probably going with that , I live in Michigan and it's not like the cover here is crazy heavy so do u think 50 pound would be good? Super User RoLo Posted April 20, 2017 Super User Posted April 20, 2017 Living in central Florida, we're dealing mainly with shallow, weedy lakes (eutrophic dishpans). For several years I spooled up with 65-lb Trilene braid, but eventually found it to be overkill. Today I flip, weed-probe and punch all day long with Sufix 50-lb braid. Rest assured, the instant I find 50-lb braid to be inadequate, I'll immediately switch back to 65-lb braid, but I don't expect that to happen Roger 2 Quote

I use the 50 in heavy milfoil mats and cattails...tie a good palomar and it won't break;) Definitely good enough. Quote
rawjuice Posted April 20, 2017 Posted April 20, 2017 Yes and to be honest, I never felt the need to use higher than 50#. I fish some HEAVY cover at times and I dont hold back on slamming that hook set and ripping them out of that cover. I have never broken off, EVER. Plus that lighter line allows for further casts! Yudo1 Posted April 20, 2017 Posted April 20, 2017 I've never felt the need to go any heavier than 50lb. Out of curiosity, how many of you have broken 50lb braid? Quote

There are lakes up here that have EU milfoil with zebra mussels growing on the foliage. The extra diameter is just abrasion insurance. Even then, it's a frustrating time. Quote
Super User WIGuide Posted April 20, 2017 Super User Posted April 20, 2017 I use 50 lb braid and fish some thick veggies. I don't see a need to go any higher. 1 Quote
