Recently purchased the smaller poisontail mold. I'd like to mold the 1/8 oz jigs without the weedguard in and then add it later but it isnt set up the same as the other molds until that take base pins. Is there a way to modify this mold or a basepin option that is small enough.

I have the same mold, and what you can do is stick in a (.081) drill bit (shank first) into the spot where the weedguard is supposed to go, put your hook in, close the mold and pour your jig. If the mold doesn't close, go down a bit on the drill size. You want the drill bit to fit snug, so it doesn't fall out when you turn the mold over. Take the drill bit out of the jig and repeat the process on the remainder you need to pour. Once you are all done paint your jigs, and then glue in the smaller weedguard into the weeedguard hole. The 1/8 oz head was not made for the FG-30 weedguard. It was meant for a smaller weeedguard. If you want a bigger weedguard to glue in later, then drill out the existing weedguard hole to the size you want.

Good info, i'd been thinking finishing nail possibly but hadnt gotten around to trying it. I purchased fg 12s for that reason. Am i going to have issues with paint clogging up the W.G. Hole? Havent gotten that far as this is my first weedless jig mold.

Just leave the nail in when you paint and bake it. Won't hurt anything and it'll keep the hole clear.

If you go to Speedy Metals just click on "stainless Steel" then "round" and select "304" grade. A chart will come up and you want to choose 5/64", that is the diameter of the FG 12 weed guard. The shipping will cost more than the steel rod which is like 30 cents per foot, get the rod and cut into 1"-1.5" lengths and you'll have base hole pins for your 1/8" poison tail mold. What I do is keep the pin in to paint, it keeps the hole open and then you can glue in your guards like you would on the larger 1/8" diameter weed guards.

There are a lot of items to use to use as mentioned above to keep the hole open in your mold. Finishing nails will work as well. The thing would be is to try to find one that has as close as a diameter to the weedguard hole in the mold. If you find a size, naturally use the painted end, however I would cut or grind the points flat so you can get the nail as far in the cavity as possible. if the nail has a tendency to fall out when you turn the mold over to pour, take some tape and wrap it around the shank of the nail, the part that sits in the mold cavity. that will tighten it up. And like mentioned above, you can leave the nail in the jig head and paint the head, however I would take the nail out as soon as you paint the jig, because the paint will stick to the nail and when you pull it out later it will chip around the hole.

Might be something i look into smalljaw. I have some pot turkey call striker tops that i could experinet with also with the excess. So that would be something to look into. Appreciate the feedback, your youtube videos on tying have been very helpful by the way.

What size hook does the 1/8 mold use (smallwst)?

I have some 1/0 light wire Mustads that work.
