so everyone has told me to go with a medium moderate rod for crankbaits. what are lightning rod shocks? I currently had a medium/heavy but looking at getting a medium for crankbaits and need to know if they are fast or moderate actions.

I would definatley classify the shock series as moderate action. The original lightning rods were more fast action.

now dumb question if its not marked how do you tell? I seen a pic of mod vs fast and fast only bends so far at the tip. I have a fast Cabela's rod and it bends a lot at the tip. way more than the lightning.

Most likely it's a brand variance. Almost all brands, makes, and models have different tendencies. This is why you hear some speak of this brand or that brand leaning one way or another as that is how that particular line of rods was designed based on whoever was behind the design. If they lean heavy most of their rods will probably lean heavy and vise verse.

A fast action rod will bend in only the top third or less of the blank, a medium or moderate action will bend in the top half or so and a slow action will bend starting in the lower third of the rod. Sometimes slow action rods are termed 'parabolic', meaning the bend of the rod is similar throughout the length.

Also the only Lightning Rod Shock listed as Moderate Fast on Berkley site is the MODEL # SHC661M .

I had a 6'6"mh shock,it has a " soft"tip. It leans moderate for action.I would thow a crank on both m and mh power depending on lure wt.Very versatile rod, does lots of techniques well imho.

The shock rods also advertise as being for super lines. Aka no stretch so I suppose the moderate action is suppose to compensate. I have 2 of them one medium 6'6 I use for top water and a 7ft MH I use for most cranks

I own many Lightning Rod Shocks.....IMHO they are not a pure fast action, nor a pure moderate action. Moderate fast would be the best description of them IMHO.

They are............also IMHO, the best sub $100 rod on the market for throwing reaction baits with braid.

I fish them right along side many higher priced name brand rods, as well as custom built rods, and they hold their own.

I use the 7'6" H rod for big deep cranks, swimbaits, A-rigs, and as a back up punching rod.

I use the 7' MH rods for frogs, swimjigs, chatterbaits, ripping lip less cranks out of grass, ripping square bills out of grass, running deep cranks on deep grass lines, silver buddy style blade baits. and fishing Biffle style wobble head jigs

I use the 6'6" MH for all of the above in close quarters work.

I use the 6'6" M for topwaters, jerkbaits, and close quarters small square bill work.

I use the 7' M spinning rods for drifting and dragging drop shot rigs, and small jigs in deep water

And I use the 6'6" M spinning rods for skipping weightless plastics under docks.

They are no slouch in the sensitivity dept. either. One season while I was waiting for my custom rods to be built, I fished with these rods exclusively. Not only with all of the above reaction baits, but I used them for pitching/flipping jigs and soft plastics, and just about every technique in the book. I never felt underequiped and caught the same amount and size of fish I always have. I have even won several tournaments using nothing but these rods that year.

That is how they are described exactly on Berkeley's website. :thumbsup_blue:

I fish with 12 baitcasting rods, many of them are priced well over $150.  Two of them are Berkley Lightning Shock rods. They are 6'6" Medium moderate action rods.  They are rated on the rods as just medium.   My main purpose for these two rods is fishing rattle traps for fall stripers. I need four different rattle traps, Red Eye Shads, XCalibur, and Cotton Cordells on the deck at one time.  This allows me to quickly identify what action and sound they are responding to and also I can have a selection of different weight baits ready to adjust to both depth and tidal current changes quickly.   I add these two rods to my Irod and Falcon rods and they hold their own very well.  I would not hesitate to fish these rods for my main rattle trap, small to mid sized cranks and even spinnerbaits.  As for being designed for braid I think i is more of a guide choice and hype than a rod design thing. Having said that they will work well with any line and I agree with some earlier posters for the money they work great.  My wife fishes all spinning rods and she fishes with 1 Lightning Shock rod as well, it is rated as a 6'6" medium also, but it has the same moderate action so they both act the same.
