Is a Tour KVD Crankin' Rod Any Good?

I am wondering what the opinion on a 6'8" Tour KVD crankin' rod, medium/moderate is? It looks very thick around the bottom where the rod meets the handle but it's only rated for 1/4oz. - 3/8oz. lure weights...is this rugged enough for 1.5" square bills? What would be the limit you'd try with this rod?

I didn't care for the 7' model I tried .  It was heavy, and insensitive.  Had a great bend, gave crankbaits great rebound on deflecting rocks or solid cover.  It just wasn't for me.  I'm too used to fishing with a full graphite, moderate stick for cranks.

Same here, I had the 7'4" MH for a short while when Walmart was blowing them out on clearance a year or two ago.

 

I used it for cranking 5xd's along deep grass edges for about a week and couldn't get rid of it fast enough. Not only did I loose my feel for ticking the grass (with braid no less) with that rod, but when I did run into grass with it and felt it, I could not get the clean "pops" and "rips" out of it I wanted. I sold it toot sweet, went back to a 7' MH mod/fast graphite rod for this, and was happy again.

The reason this rod is thicker, heavier, and less sensitive (like mentioned above) is because it has glass rather than the modern graphite that many of us have become accustomed to. It's really a matter of preference and KVD prefers his glass rods over graphite.

Lol they work for KVD... I'm beginning to grow an acquired taste for glass rods myself so far this spring.

LOL, he uses Quantum tackle, RES, and Nitro.  It's not the gear, it's the angler.  I need every advantage I can get, since I'm not as skilled.

 

In other words, the very last person in the world to influence my choices would be one of the best in the world because what he does isn't in the realm of what I do.

I will say as far as celebrity endorsements go KVD lends his name to some quality products overall.  The rod may not be for many but the KVD plastics, crainkbaits, and line conditioner have done very well for me at a fair price.

 

Here is KVD talking about why he uses glass, or a combo of both.  Makes sense to me, but once again he's a different creature on the water than I will ever be.

When the majority of us here fish for fun and possibly a few tournament series, you should take into account the 'fun' factor of a rod. 

 

I mean it works great for KVD and having personally used the 7'4MH and caught fish, it doesn't have the 'fun' factor for me. If you're on a budget and absolutely need a cranking specific rod, there's nothing wrong with it at all.

It looks like everyone offering an opinion on these rods all prefer graphite cranking rods. Nothing wrong with that. If a person who liked glass rods used one of these rods, they would probably give a more favorable review. My point is, OP needs figure out if he likes glass or graphite for cranking. I do like glass for cranking but have never used one these rods.

I have the 7'10", 3 of the 7'4" and the 7 ft model; all MH Mod.

I have no Idea whether they are any good or not.

But I do like it when then get a good bend going.

I'll give the man credit...I love the snot out of his hard baits. The KVD squarebills, the Red Eye Shad, his Jerkbaits, and the XD cranks make up about 99% of my hardbait selection, most of the time those said baits are festooned with his Mustad hooks...............but his cranking rods just don't work for me, and my style. He gets enough royalties out of me, I need to keep the money flowing to other guys too. LOL

 I hear that - I am admittedly somewhat embarrassed at just how much gear I have that has a little KVD symbol on it; baits, rods, reels, & even my darn electronics - the way I figure it is - he's taking all the guess work out it for me. . . . . .

Either that or I'm just an addicted sheep man.

Us older guys grew up on fiberglass rods. While I do prefer graphite for a long day of fishing, I still break out an old fiberglass rod with a Garcia Mitchell 300 or 304 for short pond fishing trips to bring back memories of me starting out

No one’s posted on this topic for a while but I stumbled across it so I figured I’d throw my 2 cents in. I picked up one of these crankin rods last spring after I broke the tip off of my Older graphite cranking stick. The Quantum KVD PT is a good cranking stick, especially for squarebills. It has a deep bend but enough backbone to pull fish away from cover and, because I tend to get excited and set the hook a little too hard, the softness of this stick has allowed me to have much better hookups. However I don’t like the softness and lack of sensitivity on glass rods where I need to feel bottom changes and deeper cover so this one doesn’t work too well for that for me.
