Lipless crankbait gear setup?

What type of line , rod length and action and reel gear ratio would you use to caught largemouth bass . Me and my buddy were taking and we have different combo but wondering what you guys use right now I'm using a 7ft med abu garcia vendetta casting rod , 7.1:1 gear ratio casting reel with 12lb seaguar invizx fluorocarbon n my buddy using same rod n reel but 50lb sufix 832 braid . So what are you guys using and why what the best line fluorocarbon ,braid or monofilament and what pound trst n brand . I'm open to any opinions

I throw a bunch of traps from 1/4 to 1 ounce for bass and stripers.  I prefer a 7' medium power moderate fast action rod. You want a rod that gives to protect the trebles from being torn or thrown out.  During the fall striper runs into the creeks I have 4 rods on deck with Redeye Shads, Rattle Traps, Cotton Cordells and XCaliburs tied onto both P Line Floroclear in 10 pound test and Suffix 832 in 30 pound test.  The line difference is just a matter of the two rods with braid were setup for that use specifically and the other two rods get used for most of my crankbait and squarebill work all season.

Also the braid is nice when the occasional 20 pound blue cat comes and eats you trap.  Then the real fight is on.

I don't use braid on any lure that has treble hooks.

 

Any baitcaster with a 6.4:1 or higher gear ratio will get it done, I personally like 7.1:1 so I can burn it when I want to and still slow it down off need be.

7-3 rod med heavy, 6.4 gears, 12-15 lb. big game. 1/4-1/2 oz.   for bigger traps I go with same setup but 20 lb. big game.

I use either 6'6 M/F or 7' M/F St. Croix Premier with 14lb XT. Reels are 6.3:1.

I use a 7' M Abu Veritas with a Curado 6.3:1 or higher ratio and 10 - 14 pound fluorocarbon. For heavier lipless cranks, a 7' MH Veritas Winch and the same reel with 14 - 17 pound fluoro is great.

It really depends on where you fish. 

Most lakes near me are shallow and filled with vegetation. So I use a high speed reel and a mh powered glass rod. My rod has soft enough tip to use braid but more often than not I just use 12 to 17 mono. If I was fishing them deep than I might use a 6 to 1 gear ratio.

its all about preference. what I like, might be different than most people and it also depends on how you like to retrieve your traps. I like to yo-yo my traps rather than a a more straight retrieve. in my mind I would think a mh rod would work better but I prefer a very limber medium. so much to the point that I have bought other rods and ended up disliking them because they were too stiff. I might be wrong in a lot of peoples eyes but it is what I prefer.

 

my preferred set up is a 7 ft med quantum tour kvd cranking rod with a lews bb1. spooled with 12-17 lb flouro. I don't know the gear ratio of the bb1 but I do know it is 28 inches per handle turn, which is the only speed I will throw a trap on. I don't buy reels based on gear ratio alone. one company's 6.3:1 may retrieve at a different speed than another. something like a trap is very dependent on rhythm. if you fish with one a lot, you create a rhythm. if you developed that rhythm with a reel that was 28 inches per turn and then try to fish it on one that is 26 or 30 per turn, it will be very hard to duplicate the rhythm your used to and it can mess you up. it took me a long time to figure this out. this was way before, manufacturers started publishing inches per turn speed or "IPT".

Personally I prefer using a 6'8" - 7' MH/F action rod with 7.1:1 reel and I'll use 12lb fluoro. I like to fish them around grass which is why I opt for the MH power as well as fast action.

What conditions are you faced with as far as cover and structure. For so merged vegetation, you can't beat braid for rippin a trap.  15-17lb BigGame or 10-12lb fluoro for docks and rocks. 

Your rod and reel choices are right on the money for most presentations.

I've used so many rod combinations for RatLTraps. 

 

My son's spider man $20 spincast can whip a trap out there.

 

You can bomb them on 7' M.

 

I feel mediums bomb RatLtraps

I would recommend a rod that has enough backbone to rip the lure out of grass, but enough tip that the rod will load and help to keep the fish from throwing the trebles. I prefer a high speed ratio on all my reels.  It's easier for me to slow down than speed up.  Line choice: mono if I'm running shallow, braid if the vegetation is very thick, fluoro in open/clear water. 

 

My current set up for 1/2oz is:

7' M/F BPS Pro Qualifier

Abu Revo X 6.6:1 

12# Suffix siege mono

 

IMO the critical part is matching the rod and line.  If you're throwing mono that stretches you might get away with a stiffer rod.  If you're throwing braid with zero stretch, use a rod that has more tip. Gear ratio is personal preference.
