ohihunter2014 Posted April 9, 2017 Posted April 9, 2017 I picked up a new roll of stren 6lbs fluorocarbon line and just pulling a blood knot tight on a hook the lines snapping either at the knot of right in half. Is this normal for fluorocarbon? Should I switch to something like suffix? Quote
KDW96 Posted April 9, 2017 Posted April 9, 2017 Always wet the knot before tightening. And pull it slow : ) Quote
Super User fishnkamp Posted April 9, 2017 Super User Posted April 9, 2017 Try this. Begin to tie to a jig or your hook. Try using a Palomar knot, or a uni knot. Be carefull the wraps do knot overlap and wet it completely as you pull it tight. If it breaks again there is a problem. If it holds well it was the line burning as it was pulled tight dry. If this line is defective, and I do not think it is, I would switch to a line like p Line Halo or CXX in moss green. Quote

Super User fishnkamp Posted April 9, 2017 Super User Posted April 9, 2017 Maybe it is a bad spool. I have used plenty of Stren original mono, but the only fluoro I use is from P Line. I have tried Vicious, BPS 100%, SeaGaur InxisX, and a few more on my baitcasters. I have settled on using only a few lines that perform well for me. I have some P Line Floroclear, P Line CXX,P Line Halo, Suffix 832 and Power Pro Spectra braid and tghat is it. For years I tried a ton of lines on the spinning rods that my wife and I use. If you look at them now you will find 70% have Berkley FireLine in 14 pound test spooled on them. They all have 4 foot leaders made of 8# test P Line CXX moss green. One has P Line Halo for finesse jerkbaits and two have 30 pound braid for her to fish jigs and frogs. I will not fight with line issues from any other lines. 1 Quote
Super User Raul Posted April 9, 2017 Super User Posted April 9, 2017 flouro breaking easy? how come I'm not surprised ? 2 Quote
Turkey sandwich Posted April 9, 2017 Posted April 9, 2017 You should have no issue with the Uni to Uni or blood knot line connections with FC. If it's breaking away from the knot without being damaged/stress, I would lead towards defective line. I've tied FC 6x tippet (2lb test approx) to leader and have found the problem is in my knot and not the line 95% of the time. Still, bad spools happen. Quote
Global Moderator Mike L Posted April 10, 2017 Global Moderator Posted April 10, 2017 Unless you got a bad spool...The problem is not because it's a flourocarbon line. Mike Quote
runt4561 Posted April 10, 2017 Posted April 10, 2017 most flouro will break prematurely if great care is not taken during knot tying. you have to keep it moist and cinch it down gently without friction. I also agree with what somebody said about old line. if you get a spool of stuff that has been on the shelf for a long time it could break prematurely. I had a spool like that once. 1 Quote
Esoxfreak Posted April 10, 2017 Posted April 10, 2017 everyone is right about wetting the knot first. That's a key,if you don't,while tying the knot the friction will cause weak spots In the line just above your knot. Also I had an issue a few years back and found out I was buying line that was on the shelf for quite a while(3 years in one case), it will degrade on the shelf and become brittle. not a lot of people know that like does have a shelf life...even the expensive stuff. rboat Posted April 10, 2017 Posted April 10, 2017 I tried several fluoro lines and had many break in different places. Since it is the only thing between you and a fish, I quit using it. If you have to baby it and be extra careful, count me out. 2 Quote

Yeah but [insert favorite pro bass angler here] said it was the best choice for [insert presentation here], and I keep reading it is so on the InterWeb® so it must be true. Besides I really rather be retying than fishing... 1 Quote
