What Heavy Action Rod Should I Buy?

I am looking to buy a rod for frogging and flipping/ punching, and I am wondering which one will be the best of the four that I am looking at. 

 

Dobyns Fury Casting Rod 7'3" Mag Heavy

 

Powell Inferno Casting Rod 7'2" Mag Heavy Frog

 

Shimano Exage Casting Rod 7'2" Heavy

 

St. Croix Bass X Casting Rod 7'4" Heavy

 

They are all short because I simply don't want a long rod. 

Any suggestions???

Ever thought about a lews tp1 speed stick? I have many models of them. I love my 7'3 H. The winn grips are nice too.

They run a bit heavy compared to their power ratings, maybe half a power heavier than what it says it is (which i like). I use mine to throw 1/2 to 1 ounce jigs, and if i have to throw a frog id do it on this rod as well.

Yep......Just had mine out for the first time today.  The only thing better than this is that I inexplicably had a $20 off coupon from ebay so I got mine for $90.  LOVE this rod.

I hope the OP listens to these reviews. Sometimes people get locked into certain choices when there are better for less. Why pay retail?

Here's what I have. The Frog model. It's $30 off right now. That's a $100 rod for $70. It's stiff as a pool cue. But I use it for jigs when it's not frog season.

In other words...there are a LOT of very good choices out there.  It comes down to personal preference.  I would STRONGLY suggest you hold as many of these rods as you can before you buy.  The one time I've purchased a rod without feeling it first, I wound up with a St. Croix Mojo Bass Glass cranking rod that I find to be exceptionally "meh".  I don't hate it..but I don't love it either and if I leave a rod at home, that is the one.  I KNEW I love the Tat before I bought it...and boy do I ever love it.  Feels like an extension of my hand.  But that doesn't mean YOU will love it.

Like any other rod the power rating heavy or mag heavy doesn't reference back to any standard. One rod makers heavy is another's medium heavy. I like to use number power ratings where 5 is usually the lower end of heavy and 6 being higher end heavy.

I have no way to get my hands on that Tatula but i dont care.Im buying it anyway.The only rod i ordered blind was the Gen 2 Black.

I've had my Dobyns Fury 7'3" mag heavy (5 power) for about 8 months and I love it...

Looking at the Tatula 7'4" mag heavy frog rod the upper lure weight is 2 oz, line 25 lb, should put this in the 6 power rod range.  Dobyn's 5 power maybe easier to cast from a sitting position (kayak),  can't tell without touch and feel. Good luck with your final choice.

I would say the Powell.

 

That's what I use is the Powell but not the one you have listed, mine is 7' 3" heavy with fast tip, have to double check but think it is the 734 cf.

 

Use it for frogs and heavy jigs, Caroline rigs and punching, love this rod never lets me down.

I didn't actually catch that he was yak fisherman.  If THAT is the case, I would consider the Falcon Jason Christie Frog Rod.  6'11"

I can't imagine you'll be disappointed.  The only rod I have that I can FEEL load up during the cast and then goes off like a shotgun blast. I can't wait to throw it into the muck.  (When we actually get some!)

Personally I am a big fan of the Dobyns Fury rods.  A5BLASTER has mentioned his  FR734 and that is a great all purpose rod and is fine for double duty.  You were suggesting a FR735 and that is the model Gary designed for frogs, bigger jigs and texas rigs.  I could not fit a rod over 7 feet on my boat so I purchased the Champion version it is a DC705C and that is a great frog, jig and tx rig rod.  So yes I would the FR735 would fit your needs really well.  These rods fish much more like a $200 rod than a $100 rod.  If you decide you want to go shorter rod look at a Sierra SA705C ( the equivalent to the rod I bought to do that work.)

 

I also fish Powell rods and they are great as well. I recently found out why I like them so much, Gary Dobyns helped design many of them along Keith, his friend and owner of Powell rods. . I like the Inferno model you picked. I have messed with it but never fished it.

 

One last rod I would seriously consider is the Irod Genesis IRG754F  It is a great rod for frogs, jigs, and big texas and carolina rigs.  I know a bunch of guys on The Bass College fish that rod up on the Susquehanna Flats.  The owner of that board used to put one big order in to his friend and the owner of Irod. Each time he made an order at least a couple of members ordered those rods.  Me I fish several Irods but not that one,just due to length.

 

I think you will be pleased either way you go.

I have the inferno 725 and love it. I use it primarily for pitching jigs and Texas rigs. Soft enough tip to pitch 3/16 Texas rigs accurately, strong enough backbone to send them flying out of cover more times than not. I would describe as a finesse meat stick lol

Thank you all for your input, I will take it into consideration. Tbh I never saw the Diawa rod on TW until now, and since I have heard such great words about it, I will try to find it in the store and hold it in my hands. Thanks again all!

I also own a tatula rod lol. Great rod but I use my Powell's over it most of of the time. I use my 6'10 mh tatula rod for close quarters
