not sure if "opening a can of worms" or "beating a dead horse" is more appropriate.

The absence of facts (common definition) might turn this discussion into a debate of opinions.

In my mind this whole subject is on a list that includes this guy.

Interesting article, but when it's all said and done Mr. George Perry still holds the official world record for Largmouth Bass for over 80 years now.I would love seeing the record broken by someone who just fishes bass for fun, maybe a young man/woman who doesn't compete in bass fishing tournaments.

I find the story AMAZING. Even if Perry fudged the numbers or didn't have eye witnesses' to account for the catch. Even if there are no pics, or the story changed. The fact that he chose to use 22lb 4oz as a benchmark for anglers to chase for 80+ years is remarkable to me. We have people who have made it their life goal to surpass this feat. People who named a fish, knew where she was at all times, waited till the right time to try to catch her, yet still couldn't beat the mark. People trying to grow bass in a perfect environment by controlling their diet as much as possible to try to defeat the record, yet still didn't pull it off. While this may indeed be a "fish tale", it is one that bass anglers all around the world have been aware of, and amazed by for many years.

I hope Mr. Perry's catch was legit and I hope it is indeed broke one day by someone out fishing for the heck of it, because they love to bass fish.

The Kurita fish does two things for me.  It's puts the Perry fish to bed, even though it's an IGFA tie, because it's bigger by mass.  The second, it confirms that a fish can actually get that big.  All the myth and lore about the Perry bass doesn't matter to me - 20+ lb. fish are possible.

Oh sure, add in Dottie, too. I guess my point is, there's no controversy over the world record. It's settled in my mind. Did Perry lie?  Who cares. There's a bigger fish on the books.
