Thinking of trading my AR for a bass boat, good or bad idea?

So I decided to get much more serious about bass fishing over the past 3 years. I fish several times a week and am now wanting to start fishing some local tournaments. I dont have a reliable partner and I dont have a boat, just a junk kayak. I've used the kayak before in tournys with some success but am looking to upgrade. Unfortunately the public school system pays crap. I have an AR 15 thats been a safe queen pretty much since I got her so i thought about trying to trade for a boat. So far I got one hit on a 73 ebbtide. They say everything works (obviously I will check it out first) but what do yall think, worthy trade or not worth my time?

I guess it depends on the value of your ar? How much was he asking for the boat? What kind of rifle is it? 5.56 or .223? Manufactured or home build?

That's a pretty old glass hull. I would definitely check that out thoroughly

I think I would sell my AR instead.  There are lots of used aluminum boats for sale and many would allow you to fish more easily.  I think a boat like this might work much better for you.

Like mentioned,  I'd suggest selling your ar outright.  Than search for a boat in your price range.

I wouldn't trade a nice AR for that boat you posted. 

I agree that if you're in need of a boat, sell it outright and then shop around. You're going to get more bang for your buck out of aluminum also.

Here are my thoughts, I know guns and I know the value of a ar better then most because I build them and sell them myself.

 

That boat no matter how good of a shape it is, is not worth the trade here or the reasons.

 

It's a really old boat and if you ever decide to upgrade it to a newer boat you will never get the cash that you have tied up in it.

 

It's fiberglass it may look good on the outside but it's the inside under the floors that will be the problem, it can look good on the outside but more then likely there is some root going on under the floors.

 

The features of the boat are out dated bad, you might not think that is a bad thing now but it won't take long before you will want to upgrade and it might not be possible with that boat.

 

The motor rating for that boat is a old rating system that is no longer used and the stern was made for the weight and power of the motors being made at that time, it may or may not work well with today's new four stroke motors or newer model two strokes that have been suped up.

 

Now as far as the ar you will be better off listing it for sale on a gun fourm and selling it that way, if you take it to a gun shop or pawn shop you will never get close to what it is worth.

 

If it were me I would sell the rifle the way I suggested and save up some cash and find myself a used aluminum that is alot newer and has a good trolling motor and outboard.

 

Aluminum is easyer to maintain and maintenance and will hold its value better then that old boat in the pic you posted.

 

These or just my thoughts I hope they help you in your decision sir.

I won't give an opinion about the boat, but I would seriously consider selling your ar as a5blaster suggested.

That glass boat and trailer look pretty worn. Might be a tri-hull too, which will knock your fillings loose.

 

Sell, and then spend the time to shop around.

Ask yourself. Which one will I use more and get more enjoyment of ? Whichever one is the answer.. even if just slightly, is the one you should pick.

as a 2A person, either sell the ar, and use the money to buy something, or save your pennies. 

 

the boat you showed is worth trading maybe 2 mosin 91/30s (not hex bolts) provided the motor runs... I can see soft floors from here.

looks like you have already gotten the correct advice .selling yours, then look for that bargin in your price range. nothing wrong with aluminum. good luck in your search.

I've sold one gun in my life and that's the last one I'll sell. I still regret selling it.

by the looks of it, it's going to need work (money). sell the AR if you must, but not for that boat.

Here's how I'd look at it:  AR selling prices are dropping like stones...and will continue to do so.

 

If you're not shooting it and you can get out of it with a decent trade, I do it in a heartbeat...but I'd take cash over a boat any day because cash can convert into any boat...where the deal you've set up is a one time thing....

A safe queen is great, but if you don't use it and it's not a difficult to obtain model then I would think that you'd get more use out of the boat than the AR.

Just thought Id give this an update, I went ahead and traded my AR for a 12 ft jon boat, trailer, and trolling motor. I have already used the little boat more times than I ever shot the gun. Very satisfied with my choice, also the price of my gun new dropped to 400 so I came out pretty good.

Good move, IMO.

 

ARs are a blast (pun intended) but if you're already using the boat more, looks like this was the right choice.
