steve kennedy swimming a jig

Anyone see the footage of steve kennedy swimming a jig at the classic. I fish swim jigs a lot and don't think I've ever worked one that fast on top of water column. I tend to slow roll them and need to mix it up more.  I know he's not using the fastest reel on the market but he sure is cranking that thing. Can't wait to try it during the shad spawn here. Saw a few shad working the shallows last friday.

Awesome footage.  I'm like you, I've never fished a swim jig that fast.  I feel like it would attract too many pike lol.

No pike here, but I've definitely had quite a few times where I've had to fish them that fast to get a reaction strike from bass that just wouldn't commit otherwise in clear water. Double edged sword because you miss or lose many fishing it that fast, but won't hardly get bit if you don't.

Haven't seen the footage, but one of the things that make swim jigs one of my favorite lures is that you can fish them sitting still, burning them at warp speed, or anything in between. Slow rolling is how they became famous, and they catch plenty that way, but depending on the conditions, and specially when imitating shad, makes sense to fish them faster and more erratically. Only dumb shad swim at less than maximum speed when a bass says hi. When slow rolling a swim jig, I'll speed it up for 3 cranks and then let it fall on a tight line when they aren't bitting it steady.

Another thing he did was use what looked like a zoom super chunk trailer v. a swimming trailer and imparted all the action with his rod tip. Making his bait more versatile as he could pitch with same bait on one cast, then burn it and swim it on another.

BTW he was having fun too. Refreshing seeing a guy laughing and cutting up while fitting a 5lb bass on the last day of the classic. I could learn a lot fishing with him for a day. Not only technique, but keeping it fun.

I missed that footage unfortunately, but I know just what you guys are talking about.

I did catch a video with KVD who was speed cranking a swim jig in skinny water,

and triggered one impulse strike after another.

There is a link to the vedio in the "Steve Kennedy is a Greenie" thread. I believe the fastest the green Curado reel ratio was 7.2:1, not that fast considering 9:1 ratios are availble today.
