BC Reel Power? - ratio, gears

Hello BR,

 

Almost all of my experience is with Shimano reels. Im pretty clueless when it comes to judging how well a reel will winch a high resistance bait. I have had low ratio reels that struggled more with these baits than say an 15 Aldebaran HG. Is it because of X-Ship? All of my newer reels that have X-Ship seem to have a bit more power than older versions of the same reel. Is it something else in these newer reels, retrieve ratio being the same?

 

Will changing aluminum gears to brass change the power at all? I'm going to do this anyway in a 09 Aldebaran Mg7 for an increase in IPT (7.7:1 vs 7:1) and durability and im wondering if it will handle med depth cranks a little better even though im increasing the retrieve ratio. It will be used for small and med jigs/t-rig but I am curious how it will handle cranks. My guess is that will not affect much if anything at all.

 

What are your ideas about increasing handle length to gain power? In my experience it does but how does it compare to lower gearing? Does spool/reel size affect power?

X ship is just an extra pinion support bearing. This aids smoothness and arguably longevity but affect on power. 7.1 to 7.7 is an insignificant change and I've seen no evidence of the alloy gears being less durable. Save your money. Longer handle gives you more leverage to crank but doesn't change the power of the reel. Don't forget the rod in this equation. Too light of a power can feel mushy and retrieve feel harder. Ipt, a function ratio, is the best measure of s reels power.
