I've seen people standing and fishing in jon boats and row boats quite a bit, yet I do not feel comfortable enough in mine to stand up in mine.  Is there a width for a boat that is deemed safe to stand in?  Or is it just a matter of having good balance.

I have a 12 ft. long, 32 in. wide (I think).  Does anybody stand in a similiar boat?

i have almost the exact same size boat, usually you need somethin over 50" wide before its somewhat stable to stand in. me and my buddy when we first started fishing in my boat couldnt stand when we did it would rock and feel tippy and we would just sit so we wouldnt fall out but after standing a lttle here and there me and him can stand for quite a bit and fish we have become very good at balancing the boat and working with eachother to keep it stable when im by myself its even easier i just stand in the middle and keep your stance wide usually on an angle from one side to the other in opposite corners is best. if were moving or turn the boat we will sit.

I stand on mine all the time. It 's a matter of balance, there are people that just don 't have it, my friend Luis Miguel is like a mast riveted to the boat, the boat moves to one side and there he goes  :;).

I fish out of a 12'xabout 30" alot.  I stand all the time.  It does take a little balance or sea legs.  I cant fish sitting down at all.  I even stand when I fish out of my paddle boat.

Thanks guys, I'll give it a try.  I'll just have to do it when I have a very small amount of equipment with me in case I tip it.

I fish from a 14' canoe that is 36" wide at the waterline.  This is a pretty stabile canoe, but I tip once and I swore never again.

These stabilizers are the single most important feature I have added to my canoe.   They are pricey, but worth every penny.

I cannot overstate how effective these are at keeping you safe and stable under the most adverse conditions.  Check out their video and you'll see what I mean.

i do it all the time, even with a fishin buddy.  the key is communication.  every movement fast or slow can throw the other person into the water.

we havent fallen in the water yet!

communicate every movement, especially when turning on the trolling motor.
