Teacher of the Year

I have been away for a while, a long while actually. I haven't fished in over a year so I was out of the mood I suppose. That being said, I focused my energy on being a father, step-father, fiance, and most importantly a better teacher. I realized that there is a chance that I may be the only positive influence in my students lives. Therefore, it was my goal to not only teach about the physical features, economy, government, culture, etc, but it was my goal to build a relationship with everyone of my students and everyone of my colleagues. I was amazed at what you can learn from a kid if you will open your ears and listen. Once you get to know the kids you can read their eyes and know when they need a high five, or a fist bump. It is sad, but most of the kids I teach don't have anyone that cares anything about them. In fact, 85% of our students are on free or reduced lunches. I spent many hours learning about things that I had no interest in just so I could carry on a conversation with a student. I was also amazed at how much you can help your co-workers by sharing your ideas and thoughts with them. Sometimes we don't want to act like a "know it all" and tell each other our thoughts, but I found out it will be beneficial for the most part. I tell you this, to tell you this. I found out today that I was selected as our district teacher of the year by my colleagues. I suppose it isn't a huge deal as I teach in a district with only about 55 teachers, but to be noticed is always nice. I am not posting this to brag on myself, yet to prove that if you truly want to make a difference, you can.  This is the only forum that I feel like the members are positive and supportive of other members and I just wanted to share this with you.

 

I will leave you with something I tell my Son and step daughters every morning. Whatever you do, try your very best and know that you did all you can do.

First off, welcome back!  I noticed you started posting again a few days ago, and it brought a smile to my face.

 

Second - Congratulations!!  That's a HUGE deal! Don't downplay it. You earned it, and deserve it. You made the extra effort, and your colleagues recognized it.  That speaks volumes!

Thank you Glenn! I have said some stupid things here (been put in detention, lol) and I have learned that life is far too short to get worked up over an internet forum. I appreciate all the mods do here to make the place a great forum to talk about fishing and I also appreciate all the members. This was a very humbling experience for me as I never imagined I would be recognized like this and I just wanted to share. I don't do he whole facebook, twitter, instagram stuff so this is my outlet.

Congrats man!!  getting to know your students is huge.  The school I teach at is all free or reduced lunch and these kids are striving for attention and acceptance.  You made that connection and it is obviously paying off.

 CONGRATS on award. hats off to you. you are correct, when you show a kid that you really do care you earn there respect. and do make a difference in there lives. and when they trust you enough to confide in you , it's very humbling. I have taught  sunday school, emt classes, first responder classes, special needs students and red cross cpr recertifications. you can always learn from other as well. thanks for investing in kids.

Congratulations! Thank you for being there for those children and showing that people care about them even if they have a horrible home life. I work in a K-4 school on a reservation here in MT and see how desperate most kids are for a little attention. Every school could use a few more teachers like yourself!
