Finesse Spinning Rod - Replacing MXF/MLF Rods

Hi All –

I need to add a new spinning rod to the mix. Currently using an Avid 68MXF and an Avid 7MLF for finesse/mix of plastic applications (Wacky, Shaky, Flick Shake, Tubes, Grubs, 3"-4" T-rig, Light Spinners/Cranks, Lindy). Planning to move those rods from the weekend cabin where I primarily fish, and bring them to my home for local pond/lake use during the week.

Primarily fishing open Wisconsin inland lakes where we tend to see areas of moderate milfoil by late summer. I’m largely targeting LM bass, but will also use rod for Walleye jigging on occasion. Looking to for recommendations on replacing those two rods with a single rod. Was thinking an LTB 610MLXF or LE 7’ ML in the Legend Elite Series. I’m not married to those two rods… nor St. Croix specifically. Will consider any brand or build options. Can you share some thoughts and ideas?

How about the St Croix Avid X ~  either the AXS68MXF or the AXS70MF.

 The 6'8" is XF and the 7 footer is F with a little longer handle.

Both are rated at 6-12lb test and 3/16 - 5/8 oz baits.

I have the LE 7' light and it is my absolute favorite rod I own. I'm sure the ML is just as good.

I've got the Legend Tournament Walleye in 6'3" MLXF

and it's nearly a perfect rod (except for the 4" missing

from the tip now  ) ....

 

So can vouch the LT series is stout and well rounded for

a lot of techniques.

I rock the LE 68MXF and 610MLXF.  Covers everything I want to do with spinning gear.

I have a NRX 852s and a 2016 LE Med/Fast. The Legend Elite is a nicer build but the 852s is a quiver killer. Light, comfortable and the most sensitive rod i have ever fished. 

 

It sits in between a LE 6'8"MXF and a Avid 6'9"MLXF in terms of power.

 

Very versatile rod IMO. I use it mostly for DS, shakey, weightless plastics, t-rig/jigs up to 1/4oz plus plastic. Not a bad rod for moving baits either. Its not super fast and has a great tip.

 

Its perfect for a 4" senko but can handle a 5" just fine.

 

Its expensive. There have been some 25% off sales at a few online retailers lately. That puts them at GLX price or lower. I cant pay $500+ for this rod but would if I had no choice!

 

I know an online retailer that always has 20% off of GLX and NRX. PM me if interested but be patient and look for 25-30% if you end up wanting a Loomis. They have a replacement plan similar to St. Croix if you break the rod. Unlike St. Croix, they ship first and you ship the rod back in the same tube. They do not have an upgrade option like St. Croix does though.

 

A lot of love for the new GLX online but i have not tried one.

I have the 6'10" MLXF Legend Elite and find it to be an absolute stellar rod. Could't imagine something more sensitive but I also have never used an NRX. I would be choosing between either of these two rods. I like XF action vs F action but that is merely personal preference.

I'd love to have that rod. I had a 6'9"MLXF Avid that I sold with the intention of getting the LE version.

 

Would you agree though that ML St. Croix rods lack a bit of power to be versatile? I love them for sweep sets and thinner hooks but they are not great for hard hook sets with your typical EWG hook IMO. Im basing this on a LE 6'6" ML/F, Avid 6'9"ML/XF and Avid 6'3" ML/XF.

Um well I wouldn't say that but I am using braid on mine and also walleye fishing with it. So I cannot say for sure how I feel on it for bass fishing, but I don't think its underpowered.
