Mike7468 Posted March 29, 2017 Posted March 29, 2017 I am new to kayak fishing and using fishfinders, with that said I received a Sun Dolphin Journey ss 10 ft. Sit on fishing kayak. I went out and purchased a Lowrance Mark 4 with Chirp sonar and downscan imaging. What are the pros and cons of mounting the transducer in the hull, to mounting it outside of the hull. The main bodies of water I will be in would maybe be 40 feet at its deepest. Thanks for the input. Just want to get it right from the start. If I do mount in the hull, is the sanding of the hull and transducer for the marine goop to stick to both? Quote
Turtle135 Posted March 29, 2017 Posted March 29, 2017 You can mount the transducer in "Plumber's Putty" aka "Duct Seal". See the video below. You do not need to sand the hull and I do not think you should ever sand a transducer. The advantage to using putty is that you can easily relocate it or reinstall it. Personally, I was never pleased with the results from shooting through the hull. I always wanted the immediate water temperature you get by having the puck in the water. I felt the down imaging on my Humminbirds was degraded by shooting through the hull as well. The downside to having puck on a transducer arm is that you will catch weeds and wood cover. My current kayak, the Tarpon 130x, has the Flex Pod, which gives me the best of both worlds. The puck is in the water but it is protected from objects by the design of the transducer scupper. Good luck! Quote
redbirdsfan44 Posted March 30, 2017 Posted March 30, 2017 If you mount the transducer in the hull you will not be able to use the downscan on your unit. Only 2D sonar will shoot through the hull. There are a few mounting options out there that would allow you to mount the transducer externally and be able to remove it for storage. Look into Scotty and ram mount for some of those. Hook1 has a lot of that stuff. Mounting it in the hull is the safest place to not damage it while on the water but if you want to use all the capabilities of your unit you won't be able to. (The transducer in that video is a humminbird 2D sonar transducer) Quote
Mike7468 Posted March 30, 2017 Author Posted March 30, 2017 Thanks for the input. Doesn't look like I will be shooting it thru the hull. Son is having a pontoon boat given to him so I will most likely have to rig something to work on that also. THinking about making some sort of rig with pvc pipe or something. Have it coming out of one of the rear rod holders or off the front cargo area of the yak, then see what i will have to do off the front of the pontoon. Quote
