I am from Wisconsin and recently all my friends are talking about how in North West Wisconsin at the St. Croix factory store they have three types of each rod; A, B, C.  A, being brand new and is the same you would buy anywhere else.  B, is a rod that has had either a scratch or a paint malfunction but is still covered by the lifetime guarantee and cost half the original price.  C, is a refurbished rod that had something damaged on it but was fixed by St. Croix, and comes with a one year warranty and will run a guy $30-50.

I know people always say you get what you pay for but as a college student money is hard to come by, it is pretty tempting to buy 3 Legend Tournament Elites for $40 each versus one for $150+!

Just wondering if anyone has experience with this weather it be with St. Croix or not.

If it were factory refurb'd at St. Croix, I'd probably have no

problem with it. A one-year warranty on an otherwise lifetime

waranteed product is ok. If there were issues with the fixing,

they'd probably show up in your first year of ownership.

$40 for a LT is a killer deal.

Given the reputation of St. Croix, I would suspect even the C rods are probably okay.  At that price, I'd take a chance...  (Let me know if they have any 7'-3" Frog rods at that price)

This ^^^  right there is what i would think.

Just say worst case deal it broke after 1 year you still had a great rod for that price fishing it for a year you didn't lose much if anything.

If there is anything wrong with the job that was done, it will show within a year of using it.

I had a legend tournament that i banged up against a dock and it damaged the blank pretty bad. Needless to say I didn't even bother with the lifetime warranty because I knew it wasn't st Croix fault.

I also have an avid that is now over 15 years old and if it breaks... Than its probably on me. If an insert pops out, than I'll just repair it. I'm not sendin it in.

I think it's smart to buy a rod at a fraction of its cost, so long as it has a warranty of at least a year. If the rod is already damaged and it is likely to fail, it will happen within that time frame.

damage was probably a guide that was damaged and replaced... not sure why that kills the warranty but for $40 I'd buy one.

Have a link to see this on their webpage?

I'm pretty sure you have to go to their place to get a refurb rod.

Call "em up and ask. The worst they could do is say no.

The C rods are not actually refurbished. What they are are rods that had the tips broken off. The tips have been replaced but a rod that originally 7' might be 6'6" or even less. They have a bin of casting rods and a bin of spinning rods. There is a big ruler next to the bin so you can see how much of the rod is missing. There is no warranty on these rods. They scratch off a section where the logo was so they know it was a C rod. You can get a $300 rod for $50, but there isn't much of a selection. I believe the locals frequent the store to scoop up the better values. I've never seen any of the high end rods in the bin that had less than 6 inches missing.

The B stock rods do not have the full warranty, I think it is only 1 year. They are also marked as seconds. Most of the time, theyare marked down by around 30%. The blemishes on these rods are difficult to see and few people would be able to spot any problems. Be wary of anybody selling St. Croix rods online. I've seen the B stock rods selling as new by people.

They also will have specials on different models that might be 50% off but you never know what you will find until you get there. Many times I've been there, there are no specials. When they were clearing out the discontinued Rage rods, the $150 rods were selling 3 for $200.

I have 2 "blems" (blemished) rods that I bought in Park falls over 20 years ago. They are GREAT! I don't think I'll ever inquire on the warranty!

I am considering buying one of these rods from a seller I found on Craiglist. It's a Legend Xtreme 6'8 (was 6'10) 2 inches broken off. Nothing else "wrong" with the rod.

Pics attached.

$175 including shipping.

Will two inches off the rod make THAT much of a difference?

Should I save my money and get a different rod?

Thanks in advance for your advice.

Hello @Billy Warrick and welcome to Bass Resource ~

I would not buy it as the last few inches of most any rod ( 'the tip') is where I find a good deal of Sensitivity & Feel.

I would not expect a snapped off rod to cast, or fish the same.

BUT

If you like St Croix (And I'm a fan) - The LTB line is Very Nice and are currently being liquidated at a very attractive price point which includes free shipping.

Just Say'in.

The reason I say Call Gary Dobyns before buying his rods is he nearly always has a great deal on a rod that has been returned, blemished or refurbished similar to what you need. St Croix sounds like they have the philosophy.

I've bought several refurbished rods from FFO that I use for guide trips. They take a lot of abuse and haven't had one fail yet.

I’m in complete agreement with Ajay.  Buying a refurb that’s had a guide repaired or a minor cosmetic blem is one thing. I can’t see any value in buying a rod that’s missing a portion of its tip.

I’m gonna pass on it and get a legend tournament for $160

That’s a great idea. Depending on what you need the rod for there’s some fantastic deals on the MB Orochi XX line. All between $175-199.
