Has anyone installed their own onboard charger? I am looing at a boat and thought maybe an onboard charger would be a good investment. Has anyone had any problems with one?

Also for those who own stratos boats i'm looking at 2 one is a 96 with a johnson 150 and the other a 93 with a evinrude 150 both bout the same price and same distance away. I was wondering how stratos owners like the boats and what might be some things on the down side if any? Any help or comments would be appreciated. Thanks

as far as the charger question goes:

i have installed one myself.  it is as easy as drilling a few holes and securing with bolts (goop up the bolts and holes with sillicone).  i mounted mine on the underside of a hatch door where my batteries are located.  there are some instructions about where to aviod installation (i.e. away from fuel if i remember correctly) but as long as you open the hatch a few minutes after arriving back at home, let any fumes that might be in escape and always plug the charger in before plugging ext cord into outlet (and reverse when unplugging) you should be fine.

as far as investment goes:  yes, i would highly recc.  it is the convience of plugging in and leaving it (as long as you get a good charger) that makes it so nice.  BPS has chargers that go on sale every now and then.

Stratos boats: cant help you there.

On board charger installation is a no-brainer.

Stratos boats are very nice, well built boats.  I have a Stratos 169V (87 model), an 89 Stratos 285 Pro and 99 Javelin R20 built by Stratos and have no complaints.   They look good, ride good, handle rough water pretty good and are not the slowest boats on the lake, not the fastest either unless you do like me and put 300 hp motors on the back but they do ok.
