Assume by "spires" you mean "Spirex"?

I've got two Shimano Spirex reels and they've

stood the test of time, 4 boys, fresh and salt

water and a ton of fish.

Though, I should admit, one is in need of some

service...

Solid reels the Spirex, but you have to like the

lack of anti-reverse and the trigger system. I

don't mind either, though I fish with higher end

Shimano Stradics now.

I like the Spirex's because I am over 50 :D.

The Spirex is the highest Shimano model that has both the quick trigger & double paddle handle, features that I grew up & am comfortable with.  The lack of antireverse actually makes it easier to get the line to the top of the reel for casting without thinking about it.  It also has a short neck, allowing me to feather casts with my index finger pretty darn well.  If they offered those Spirex features in a higher end reel, I'd probably buy it

I have 4 of them, 2 rear drag & 2 front drag.  The rear drags are nice for swapping out line sizes without having to readjust the drag (plus I like the "emergency" drag adjustment lever), but they are a little heavier.  They have performed well and have never cost me a fish due to drag or other malfunctions.

My wife and I fish with a bunch of Presidents and love them. I wanted a higher end reel for her frog rod so I went with a Shimano Symetre. I hope I will not regret it. They have had terrible trouble with some of them locking up and had no fix so they discontinued them.  I have since purchased a Pflueger Supreme for another of her heavier setups. I have never been dis appointed by Pflueger yet. Some of our Presidents are more than a decade old and 2 are newer.

I use to be a huge Shimano fan. I have 4 still in occasional use. Great reels....until they are not so great. The spool friction rings can go bad and cause a sticking retrieve from time to time. Repairable, but annoying. It happens. Which I think is why Shimano changed all their models a few years back - with a substantial price increase to go along with it!

Since then, I started using the Pflueger Presidents. Great reels; quite a bit less expensive than the Shimano's, yet every bit as smooth and reliable. I now have 3 more and they are kept in use for most of each season. For my money, I believe the President's have no equal. JMO!  :)

I own and love all three reels you mentioned. The Shimano Spirex RD, Pflueger President and Pflueger Trion.

I consider this class of reels to be my workhorse reels. Great quality, great price and I don't get so worked up if they get a little boat rash. They haven't let me down yet.

My Pflueger Supreme on the other hand I handle with care. My fishing partner was rolling when he saw me wrap a towel around the reel before I put it in the rod holder to prevent scratches. He said way to baby that reel by putting a diaper on it.

My ONLY spinning reel is a President.  Not a fan of spinning reels in general but when I need to do some finesse fishing, my Pres does the job every time and I like using it.  Its hauled in some hogs and is a pleasure to use.  Can't go wrong with it.

Presidents and Trions are all I use. They perform above their price point, and stand up to abuse from my clumsy, bumbling ways. I can't ask for much more than that.

Can't speak to the spirex, I have a couple of symetre reels and I love them.  I also have a President that I like a lot as well.  It's served me well over the last several years.  Solid reel, good price.

The Presidents are great and the Trions are pretty dang good too. I hate the trigger and double paddle handle on the Spirex, so I've never used one much. The binding issues on Shimano spinning reels turned me off to them completely. Now, all but one of my spinning reels are either Pflueger, or Okuma.

The President is a very good spinning reel, but I prefer the Shimano Spirex. My oldest Spirex is +20 years old and has helped  me catch my top 3 biggest bass to date, lots of offshore fish(dolphin, kingfish, mackerel, snapper, etc), and even some sharks. It's definetly worth every single penny,at least for me.
