robster80 Posted March 27, 2017 Posted March 27, 2017 Handled a couple of the newer GLX recently. very impressive. Just wondering are they worth that price tag? Ive seen a couple slightly used here and there for a pretty good deal and have been considering grabbing one for mostly a soft plastics/texas rig setup. Seems ive read some guys arent fans of the handles Quote
Super User NHBull Posted March 27, 2017 Super User Posted March 27, 2017 I gave a cplofloonatics@yahoo.com GLX and E6x's. The GLX is hard more sensitivity and money well spend for the techniques that require feel Quote
Super User lmbfisherman Posted March 27, 2017 Super User Posted March 27, 2017 This answer may vary for everyone really. I have a few GLXs, they are awesome rods with great sensitivity and I have no issues with the handle. However I have the last version and not the newest version. I heard they are even better. In my opinion they are a "nice to have" if you can afford them. I find myself fishing the Zodias level rods is good enough and the right budget balance of build, quality and sensitivity to suit my everyday needs, but when the jigs/plastics bite is on I sure love fishing with the GLXs. 2 Quote

Ive been fishing texas rigs/soft plastics with a Powell Max 683. Which to me is pretty sensitive but i figure i can find something a little more sensitive. 1 Quote

Get that for the ultimate sensitivity? Quote
runt4561 Posted March 27, 2017 Posted March 27, 2017 GLX are great rods no doubt about it. If I had unlimited resources I might buy a whole stable of them but I have a budget and I would rather have several rods. In my opinion, there are rods out there that perform just as well for less $$. The big thing in my mind is that Gloomis is one of only three rod brands that I have never broken and I have caught hundreds of fish on them and one of them is getting close to 20 years old. 1 Quote

Which model glx do u use for soft plastics? Not sure if i should go with a mh/extra fast or the heavy/fast Quote

I tend to fish 3/8 oz most of the time, so my 853C gets the nod most of the time. 854C if you use the 1/2 oz more. If you like longer rods get the 893 or 894C. For me I use the longer ones for deeper water. Same weights. 1 Quote

Usually dont use over a 3/8oz tungsten weight. 1 Quote
Super User lmbfisherman Posted March 27, 2017 Super User Posted March 27, 2017 Have fun with the rod if you get it! I know I did and still do, I do still want to get my first NRX. I have been waiting for a NRX 842C used or get a NRX 893C. Everytime they go up, some one gobbles them up here locally. 1 Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted March 27, 2017 Super User Posted March 27, 2017 Well, I have several, but not the newest version. Mine are OUTSTANDING rods, but I have now moved on to the Dark Side and will be replacing everything with custom rods. Look into RainShadow blanks through Batson. I have one rod built on an Immortal Blank and three others using the Eternity. http://batsonenterprises.com/brands/rainshadow/ Talk with Mike at DVT about building you the PERFECT stick! http://www.delawarevalleytackle.com/ Quote

The NRX MBR 842c and NRX JWR 893c. I bought them both as demo/rep samples for less than $400 each and they were brand new in plastic with tags. I don't know how you being in Canada affects the pricing though? Hope you are able to get these rods, you WON'T regret it!! 1 Quote

Paying the duty doesn't make it worth it at this time. Quote

I p/u a NRX 852S from Cabelas.ca last fall for $500Cdn. and the new GLX 822DSR from American Legacy for $311US plus about $50Cdn. which included GST and duty. 1 Quote
Super User Alpster Posted March 27, 2017 Super User Posted March 27, 2017 I have 3 GLX (some years old) that I love. Drop shot, MB783 and a 9wt fly rod. Great rods. Quote
Oklahoma Mike Posted March 28, 2017 Posted March 28, 2017 Ultimately it depends on the person and available resources, but I feel that the GLX is worth the money. I have both the older version and the most recent one and much prefer the newer model. That said, if you can afford to spend another $100, the NRX is worth the difference IMO. Quote
Cgrinder Posted March 28, 2017 Posted March 28, 2017 I think the retail price is just a bit high. Maybe 8-10%? Quote

Prices are up roughly $100 over what the series started with years ago. Granted everything in this world has gone up but that is still a pretty steep climb. For the OP the new rods are quite nice. I have no issues with the reel seat or components used on my MBR 844 though I only have a few hours on it. The blanks are very nice and I dont think there is much of a drop performance wise from my NRX. The balance is far better on the MBR rods so I couldn't tell you if they are good or bad on some of the longer models. You mentioned a 3/8 is tungsten weight plus plastic. Depending on the plastic used you will easily clear a 1/2 oz weight and likely be nearing 5/8oz. I would give the 844 the nod or maybe the 894 if you fish heavy cover. The 843 would be pushing its upper limit around 5/8 IMO. The 844 is one of those rods that seems to have the "it" factor 1 Quote
