Since i love the BPS 6'8 M/XF Carbonlite Rods but I really hate the white color.

I was thinking that I could paint it black. Do you guys have any recommendation that would be easier to do this ?

Or I could call basspro and beg them to go back to black rods :)

You can paint a blank using one of the plastic flexable paints from home depot in the rattle can.  I would not recommend doing it for the following reasons. It will add weight to the blank reducing sensitivity, it may react with the thread wrap epoxy, and that much masking just will not be any fun...

I cant live with WHITE Rod, I just cant ....

Guess I will need to go with St.Croix Rods then, Maybe a Mojo or Avid X.

Take the guides off, strip the paint off with citrastrip paint stripper, put the guides back on, go fishing.

i Citra-strip every rod blank i have built , even matte black blanks like the Phenix blanks and also did my St.Croix Legend Tournament Muskie rod with the Colbat blue finish had to go !!

To his defense I didn't buy that rod either cause it was white.

If you're really serious about changing the rod's color, then there is a way to do it that should not affect the action that much.  There are a lot of builders who have painted rods using Duplicolor spray paint + clear coat.   I don't know if it needs a primer, but I expect the people at the auto parts stores will know.  Graphite rods are not that different than auto plastic parts like fascias.  Also, the white color of your rod is undoubtedly paint, so that should provide any primer function that is needed.

First scuff the old finish with scotch abrasive pads.  If you start seeing graphite, stop.

Mask off the guides and grips.  Probably should do this first rather than second.

You will want to use very thin coats.  The color coat may even be a "tint" that will show up as a light shade of the color (or allow the color of the primer to show, if one is used.  Try to avoid a primer.  With the scuffing, I really don't think one is necessary.    Without one you'll feel better about getting a denser color with the color coat.  If you have some of those fiberglass driveway marker rods, practice on a couple.

Be aware that you just might make this rod into a total failure.  Since you cannot fish with it, not that big a deal.  Auto paints are flexible enough for rods; Rodgeeks uses auto paints to provide 28 colors of rod blanks.  If you get it done, post some pics, and good luck with it.

If it were mine, and I wanted to get rid of the white color, I'd do as spoonplugger suggested. Remove the guides, strip the paint, and re-wrap the guides.

I would likely go one step further, and put new smaller, lighter guides on it. Alps F series titanium frame guides, Fuji Alconites, Recoils, etc; all in much smaller sizes than what came on the rod originally.

With a lighter guide train, and the weight of the finish removed, you just may discover a better performing rod.

Thanks for showing me the ropes - I actually learned a few things from each of you after googling some items. I am considering doing it, I just need to do a "house sitting" at a friend house when get goes away for the weekend. So I can use the garage...

Then again - time and materials invested into this, I could have gotten a custom build rod or St.Croix that is ready to fish. Decisions, decision and decisions..

If you do the work yourself, it wont be that expensive. Thread and epoxy are cheap. Fuji Alconites are about $2 each. You will probably need 8 or 9 guides for that rod. Sometimes a simple spiral wrap will eliminate one guide.

If it were mine, I'd use three size 5, and the rest size 4. Nice and light in weight.

Unless you have a spinning rod. In that case, a set of Microwave spinning guides would be the ticket for a first attempt.

Google up static load testing.

I understand completely. I also can't stand the bright white rods and reels. Way to ruin a good rod. Besides the general aesthetic -for me- I fish from shore a lot and will be standing against darker backgrounds. Rod flash I can't live with. I have an older Carbonlite in glorious, stealthy, hi-tech, super-cool, black.  B)

As I found when DVT stripped down and re wrapped a busted build I had done on an LTB blank. This rod will never leave my possession. It is so very perfect and is my #1. No blue paint, a lighter guide train and a smidge longer handle made a good feeling rod absolutely perfect for me. Keep in mind I sent mine to the pro. I turned 2 full cork grips into split grips by myself and got decent results, but its not work like the real builders do. I like the rods alot better now though and use them 10x more bc of it.

Can always get a Lews rod. I used them. Have yet to have one fail me. Though thinking of giving Halo Rods a try. But I have the Mach Speed sticks. And they are nice. Planning to get another for crank baits.
