"First time braid suggestion" part 2

I have to start by saying thanks for the help in last post.

 

I want to local tackle shop. His braid selection was not that great. I went with the Power Pro because it seemed to be the right thing to do with the lack of him having Suffix to even look at. There were a few version of Spiderwire but the dude there had no idea how to tell me the differences. I picked up the Power Pro 20# with the diameter of 6#test in moss green. Wish he would of had it in more of a bulk ydg. pkg. option but he didn't. Maybe for a first timer that was best.

 

I understand the use of a fluorocarbon leaders but, want to get an opinion on possibly not using a leader.

 

If my prime use for this set up will be in water that for the most part would be considered stained, river may stay stained all season, hard to say. With my line being a low visibility moss green, and the diameter being small @ 6# test approx .010, would it make sense to tie direct to my crankbaits?

 

I don't think it will be used for anything other than 1/4 to 3/8 oz. crankbaits.

 

Your opinion is appreciated. I might be making this braid thing out to be more than it is. Thanks.

I only use a leader when I fish a lake that has 10+ feet of visibility. You could always tie a leader on and when you get a good bite going cut it off and see if the bite dies off. If you are fishing an area with jagged rocks or zebra muscles you will want to use a leader. Braid gets ripped up dragging through rough rocks

I never use a leader but I also do not fish clear lakes. For the waters you a describing, I doubt there is any reason to use a leader as the knot will just give you a another place to break off.

This is not the first time I've said the following, and

it won't be the last.  

 

You are fine to go straight braid. There, I said it! I used

to do so. But these years I've tied a leader on every setup

because I tend to retie hooks/techniques often. I don't use

a ton of rods, so multiple techniques on a few.

 

So a leader allows me multiple reties before cutting into

my braided mainline, thus preserving my braid investment.

 

Take it or leave it. This is what I do, and it's not always a

reason many state (like leader for abrasion resistance and 

so on).

 

I have 100% confidence in my leader knots, and I've not

had one fail me in a very long time. Always give a good

test of the leader knot before and after cutting the tag

ends...

I use straight braid all the time.Just use mono backing or tape on the spool to prevent line slip.I have never used a leader.

Straight braid is fine.   I've used hi vis yellow and still caught fish.  I use leaders like Darren says, I use up the leader to make my braided mainline to last longer.

I have flouro leader material to use. For the conditions I fish it will probably be necessary. Rocks. I'm constantly feeling for nicks and retying when necessary now with the flouro and mono. Didn't give much thought about it fraying.

 

Pretty obvious I don't know much about braids. Thanks for the all help.

I use leaders because I fish around rocks. I also use mono for leaders because flouro is expensive and not needed imo.
