ohihunter2014 Posted March 24, 2017 Posted March 24, 2017 anyone have experience with this combo? http://www.cabelas.com/product/ABU-GARCIA-SILVER-MAX-SILVER-MAX-CAST-CMBO/2171832.uts Im torn between buying a casting rod and putting the quantum tournament i was given on it or buy this combo. I messed around with the quantum the other day and no backlash or any issues. i was also thinking of either putting the bait caster on a lightning shock rod of fenwich eagle. im a weekend angler so don't need anything real fancy. Super User bowhunter63 Posted March 24, 2017 Super User Posted March 24, 2017 There a good combo,I have a black max and a silver max and have never had any trouble whats so ever.I use my wading for smallies all the time,They held up real well so far. Quote
sully420 Posted March 24, 2017 Posted March 24, 2017 I have a sliver max and it is really good for the price. Don't know about the rod. Quote
CTBassin860 Posted March 24, 2017 Posted March 24, 2017 1st combo i ever bought.Only reason im nor still using it is i broke the rod in the door and i took the reel apart and wrecked the main shaft. It was still going strong after 4 seasons. If your just starting with baitcasters id recommend it for sure.If you have experience with them already,id suggest upgrading to something better. 1 Quote
ohihunter2014 Posted April 3, 2017 Author Posted April 3, 2017 anyone else have experience with the silvermax? Broke my quantum and may need to get a new BC. Quote
stk44 Posted April 3, 2017 Posted April 3, 2017 The silver max will do what you need it to do. The "flipping" switch is unnecessary and actually makes "pitching" much more difficult than it needs to be. I spooled mine with 30 lb braid and it casts 3/8 t-rigs very well. It's a solid reel, but it definitely doesn't have a very refined feel. I'm only not a fan of magnetic only braking systems. There are a lot of REVO's on sale at TW right now if you want to get more bang for your buck. Quote
ArkLa Posted April 3, 2017 Posted April 3, 2017 I have the silver max gen 2 and think it's complete Junk. The thumb bar/spool release would get stuck or even hard to press down. Tried cleaning it last night, I disengaged the switch Bc I think it's useless and it works a little better. I have owned that rig for 3 year Used it prob 4 times and haven't caught a fish on it yet. Save the headache and buy a Lews. Quote

You've had that many problems and you've only used it 4 times huh?The switch is just on and off for flipping/pitching.How exactly did you "disengage" it? Are you saying that you opened the reel and removed it? Quote
ArkLa Posted April 4, 2017 Posted April 4, 2017 @MassBassin508, the switch wasn't the problem, anytime I would press the spool release with my thumb it was difficult to press down and would seem to get stuck, also when I would begin to reel it would not kick the spool release back almost like it was jamming. So I disassembled the reel, and removed the spring to that switch and it works smoother now. Quote

I ask because my thumb bar doesn't work right after taking the reel apart, and the reel will not engage unless I flip the switch on and off.A lightbulb just went off in my head.Did your drag happen to work improperly after? No the drag worked.make sure you have all the o rings in the correct place for the drag to work correctly it happened to me too. The reason why the thumb release won't work is because the reel spike is not catching it properly. Remove the larger sprocket on the reel and make sure the jagged spoke is flush so that large sprocket sits closer to the reel then it will catch. Quote
TX-Deluxe Posted April 4, 2017 Posted April 4, 2017 If you can cast your desired bait into the water it will catch fish. Quote
kylek Posted April 4, 2017 Posted April 4, 2017 I have had 2 of these combos for over 3 years. I have not had any issues with them at all. Quote

Delaware Valley Tackle Posted April 10, 2017 Posted April 10, 2017 I agree that the flipping switch is am unnecessary weak link. Quote
CTBassin860 Posted April 11, 2017 Posted April 11, 2017 I took mine back apart and removed the flipping switch.Put it back together and its working properly! Im going to find a beater rod to put it on to leave in the truck! Quote
Clackincrank53 Posted April 11, 2017 Posted April 11, 2017 I have a 2nd gen silver max but never use the flipping switch, other than that imo the silver max is the best 50-60 dollar reel I've ever owned and I have owned and own several in that price range.. All 5 reels in the max class are great reels for the price..I own all 5 2nd gens and am assuming the 3rd gens follow suit... Quote
