Hi Folks,

I am curious why Lowe chose to build a U shaped framework at the transom end of the 1236.  There is a small hole designed to put a gas tank and 12 volt battery into.  The battery would be snugged right against the gas tank.  I would say that it is common for a little gasoline residue to cover the outside of the gas tank.  What would happen if a spark flew from the battery?  Curious to hear your opinions on this boat.

The 12 footer is the only boat that comes with this U shaped design on the back.  Why is that?

I'm going out on a limb here but I would say if the battery was in a plastic marine box with the lid on it strapped down everyone would be happy.

I have a Minn Kota power center battery box.  Might be a good idea to keep the side with the outside posts away from the gas tank side.

I am also wondering about the U shaped framework at the transom.  The 12 footer is the only model to have it.

Yeah common sense is a good thing :thumbsup3:

I bet it is needed on that boat for structural integrity and possibly for more space to fill with foam flotation.  Sometimes it just the way a designer thought it would work best. You probably do not need more than a 3 gallon fuel tank for the small gas engine.

Added structural strength

On larger boats, 14' & wider bottoms I use it to build a back deck.

I always put my battery in the bow to offset weight.

As others have mentioned, support and flotation.  If you look, they only use .043" aluminum and it's rated for 10 hp.  With a 36" width, they probably felt in needed that extra support.  Many of the wider 14' that only have .064" aluminum have that same design but the ones with .072" doesn't.  The 10' didn't but it's only rated for 5hp.
