First of all I know that Dobyns doesn't make the DX762S anymore. I acquired it during Black Friday sales in 2015. I've still never used it. I was considering biting the bullet and paying the upgrade fee for a 742 or 743. I find the 762 a bit whippy in the tip. It probably would make a good spybait or Ned rig rod but I wasn't sure that I wanted to limit a $350 rod to such few uses. Thoughts on the DX 742 or 743 spinning rod.

First lets look at this a bit differently.   What techniques would you like the spinning rod to handle?  Ideally will you fish Ned Rigs, Sencos, grubs, tubes, light texas rigs or what?

I would expect the DX 742 to be the same whippy stick your DX762 is. So if you would feel more comfortable fishing something heavier than you probably want a DX743.

I think I would call out to Dobyns and ask this question directly to Gary or his son Richard. The are happy to answer customer's questions.

I haven't figured it out exactly yet but I'd imagine tubes, grubs, maybe finesse jigs, senkos, possibly drop shot and spybait. I know that's a lot to ask from 1 rod.

I have the DX742S and love it for open water smallies. One of my favorite sticks. It is a very versatile rod with a very unique action I have not found on any other rod. I have mine paired with a 2500 Daiwa and 10lb braid and 8lb leader. I mainly throw GY grubs and 4"-5" paddle tail swimbaits (i.e. Keitech) with it. I also use it a my backup tube rod. I don't throw spybaits but do throw smaller jerkbaits with it. IMHO, it will do anything you want a spinning rod to do and do it well. I have not used the 762 or 743 but think the 743 is too powerful for dropshot and spybait (smaller hooks) but would be better for finesse jigs, tubes, and t-rigged senkos (beefier hooks).
