jerk bait rod advice

Right now I fish jerks on a dobyns fury 705 cb.  Ild like to upgrade to I guess more of a jerkbait specific style rod.  I throw a lot of vision 110s as well as 110+1s and recently purchased some duo 100dr and 120 s which seem to have more resistance. The 705 is a moderate action rod and I've notice some guys swear by moderate and some swear by fast action most stay in the medium power range. Some people prefer what I would consider a shorter rod ( under 7') which is why I need your advice here guys I already have decided Ild like to go shorter then 7' for jerks so my rod don't slap the water as much. So what are some good options out there...what are you currently using... Is it mod or fast action... This is a baitcasting set up... Also Ild like to stay under $300 ill bepairing the rod with either a lews tournament mb or possibly a tatula sv when I can get my hands on one spooled with probably 10# flouro

I use about 5-6 different rods, none longer than 6'6" and my favorite is the Avid 6'2" M/XF of which I have 2.  For the heavier baits, I use a 6'6" Crucial M/XF.  All are M powers.  The Avid 6'8" M/XF is a great choice if you want a longer rod.  I do not care for mod actions for anything.  Mod-Fast is acceptable for cranks.

Honestly, I think the 705CB is probably a pretty good rod but I use a 7' KLX M/MF for smaller jerks and a MH/MF for deep divers and bigger jerks. 

 

I always use Mod Fast for treble hook presentations. I wouldn't spend the money if you didn't have to, but that's completely up to you.

I would say medium but to each his own. I am tossing 1/4, 3/8 and 1/2 oz jerkbaits

I like a fast but soft tip for jerk baits. I feel like it's easier to impart subtle action.

On the more moderate side, I'd agree with the Megabass. Really like mine. However, if you want something to the faster/stiffer side, the Cabela's Tourney ZX jerkbait rod is surprisingly crisp and balanced, and at a great price:

I like a short rod.  I use the 6'3" g loomis jerkbait series.  I used to use a an IMX 6'6" MH, and like both options.  I pair it with a chronarch Ci4 and some 10lb tatsu.  Perfection with a nice vision 110 GP pro blue.

I use the Abu Garcia IKE series rod it's the 6'4" delay series it's shorter so your rod won't hit the water and the handle is shorter (12") so you won't hit your arm either whether you twitching it or or really yanking on it like kvd

Wow a lot of guys using that orochi ... Anyone have any experience with a kistler magnesium2 in the lite medium heavy moderate I think its a 6'8" kinda like the fact it's "supposedly" in between two powers ivealways kinda felt underpowered with a med and over powered with a mh I see the orochi is kinda like this as well with a 4.5 So its in between there 4&5 power I think...there site is kinda confusing plus wen I'm there I get sidetracked on all the good lookin jerkbaits

I use an older All Star 6' M Fast action rod for lighter Rogues , twitch minnows , etc. as I can impart action straight down in front of me (versus off to the side) plus I can work the bait in one spot longer with small twitches (easier to do on a shorter rod) .

I agree with you,we must fish the way we find most effective.For me a medium heavy 6'0"-6'6" rod works great for medium to large jerkbaits that I use for bass and various saltwater gamefish (snook,tarpon,jacks,etc).

I'm a bit surprised by all the short rod recommendations.  I found a lot of times that accuracy isn't critical, but backing off of bass in clear water less than 12 feet, is critical.  Having a longer rod to launch a jerkbait can be huge.  That saud, I primarily use med, med/mod rods.

If you have questions about the MB call up Gary at the Tackle Trap, he will get you squared away. No experience with the Kistler Magnesiums. I am very fond of my Kistler KLX CRT 6'9" MH/ModFast for cranks. I could it working for Jerkbaits as well, and it comes in several lengths. Also fond of my Helium 3 MH/ExFast stick. The Helium also comes in light/medium heavy power fast action. 

 

I do sometimes use a faster action rod with jerkbaits but that's usually with smaller jerkbaits that I throw on spinning gear. In that case I'm using a St Croix M/XF. 

 

Don't let the taper rating on the Jerkbait Special fool you, while its Fast it's very crisp, and recovers fast, it's not a noodle.

You're going to get lots of different answers on this, of course, since there's no one rod that fits everyone for every jerkbait situation. I have not fished that MB rod but have and use multiple rods, like Jeff H. The Loomis MBR782 is a good one as is the Falcon 6'7" MH weightless worm rod. I also use spinning rods when using lighter/smaller jerkbaits. For the larger baits you mentioned, I would agree the Dobyns 705 you are using is fine as I used to own and use their 705CB glass. I prefer a shorter rod (less than 7 foot). I also prefer a more moderate action rod for all treble hook lures. Figure out what exactly you like and don't like about the 705 Fury and go longer or shorter, more or less power, more moderate, etc. Don't focus so much on brands.

I like a 7 foot med mod/fast, currently using a dobyns 704cb. 10 pound flouro, but may start throwing braid/leader for the summer. The 7 foot length is good for distance and leverage once they are hooked. I'm covering water not target casting, so I don't want anything less than 7. If you do, check out the 684cb.

I agree with MDbassin. The nicest things about the Abu Garcia Ike delay series jerkbait rod is that from the reel seat forward the rod would probably resemble a 6'6 or 6'8" rod, but the rod has a shorter back end at the split grip area. This means it never hits you in the stomach or forearm.  This makes setting up your cadence easier.

I have noticed many of the shorter med mod rods still have the longer handles.

I use a sidearm jerking motion parallel to the water which allows me to use 7' to 7'-4" rod length. I like a mhm rod rated up to 1 oz because I use a lot of 3/4 to one oz baits on braid with a mono leader. The moderate rod action on a quality blank keeps the fish pinned without tearing out hooks but allows crisp action to the baits. If your are using mono or fluoro instead of braid you can use a fast action or medium fast rod in m or mh power depending on bait weights because of the inherent stretch in mono/fluoro. 

My favorite braid rod is a st croix legend extreme custom 7'-4" MHM. I just picked up a kistler z bone LEXF-3MH-7' to use with fluoro.

I throw jerkbaits including Pointer 78 and 100s on my St Croix Avid 66 MF casting rod.  It's got a soft tip that works well for me.

Love vey to hear what you think of that Zbone once you get some time on the water with it. Especially if you try any other presentations with it.

moderate gives better action, but can't be worked as fast. fast action is good for working the bait faster. the rod is less forgiving. I like a shorter handle, and a rod thats short enough not to hit the water.
