Bigchunk Posted March 20, 2017 Posted March 20, 2017 One will be going up near me, I've never been to one. How are they ? 1 Quote
blckshirt98 Posted March 20, 2017 Posted March 20, 2017 I'm curious too since these stores are relatively new (first one opened in 2013). Are they more like a BPS with a lot of in-house/major national brands? And how large are the stores compared to say, a normal Dick's Sporting Goods (which all seem to be the same size no matter which Dick's you go to). Quote
Super User Jar11591 Posted March 20, 2017 Super User Posted March 20, 2017 One just opened near me within the last year. Huge selection of fishing gear. It is just as good as any BPS or Cabela's that I've been to. It doesn't compare to a regular DSG. They have a huge selection of rods, a decent selection of reels, and they carry a lot of brands that DSG around me didn't carry before. My ONLY beef with F&S (I am there all the time) is that the staff are just as clueless when it comes to fishing as they were at DSG. But this seems par for the course when it comes to big box stores. Not just fishing tackle either. They have a huge selection of fishing clothing as well. Huk, Columbia, Under Armour, and Field and Stream fishing apparel. I would definitely recommend browsing at a F&S. If its anything like my local one, you probably won't be disappointed. 2 Quote
chadmack282 Posted March 20, 2017 Posted March 20, 2017 F&S in northern Kentucky (just south of Cincinnati) is pretty much inbetween BPS & DSG. They have a lot more than DSG but a lot less than BPS... Quote
tander Posted March 20, 2017 Posted March 20, 2017 Dicks and Field and Stream are tied in together. I think Dicks owns F & S. 3 Quote

Super User iabass8 Posted March 20, 2017 Super User Posted March 20, 2017 We just had one open by us. It has one of the largest tackle selections I've see. Rod selection isn't the best but they carry some MB rods. Much better selection than any BPS or Cabeals, tackle wise, I've been to. 2 Quote
Quarry Man Posted March 20, 2017 Posted March 20, 2017 Dicks and Field & Stream are both part of the same parent company, coupons and gift cards work at the same places. I like that they have more stuff at the actual stores than cabala's. If you like ima, they have regular sales. Its a good store! 1 Quote
Mike556 Posted March 21, 2017 Posted March 21, 2017 As stated before, F&S is owned by DSG (as is runner's world and golf Galaxy). They should have a decent selection in store, field and steam being the (obvious) in-house brand. I've only been to one and am hoping that they build one near me soon. I know that some of the stores have clueless workers. There's a way to change that. Apply for a position! That's what I did. In my store we're lucky to have multiple guys in the lodge who at least know fishing. Yes, I work at DSG part time. The fringe benefits are nice! Quote

Do they make you promote extended warranties on every sale like Gander Mountain did and most other big stores? I have a friend that worked at a Gander Mountain in college and he hated it. He's a very knowledgeable guy so I thought it would be a great job for him but he said they basically forced all of their employees to push extended warranties. If you didn't sell enough of them you didn't get paid as much and I don't think you got treated as well. Needless to say he didn't work there too long. Quote

I don't think I've pitched a warranty in 3 years. In fact, some people I tell to not get warranties because the products come with a lifetime factory warranty. I have a good base of customers who come in because I tend to be open and honest with them (tell them things are flat out junk or not worth the price). I might lose a sale in the short term but gain a loyal customer in the long run. Quote

Super User fishballer06 Posted March 21, 2017 Super User Posted March 21, 2017 I live a 1/2 mile from the first Field and Stream store that was built and I'm forced to drive past it every single day in order to get anywhere... What a dilemma. The stores are about the same size as a Dick's. In fact, they put our F&S in the old Dicks store, and built a brand new two floor Dick's to accommodate the F&S store. However, F&S specializes in specifically outdoors gear (hunting, firearms, fishing, camping, clothing, archery, marine). So you get a store the size of a Dicks, with a very good selection. The only section that really has F&S branded items is clothing. The fishing selection is very good for a chain store, and their prices are pretty reasonable too. I live so close that I am always stopping in to see whats on sale that week or on clearance. I've scored some phenomenal deals (in fact, steals) this way on some very nice tackle (and firearms). I suggest joining their rewards program. You get $10 back for every $300 you spend in store. They can add up quickly. Occasionally they send out flyers to sales/promo's that include coupons or bonus points. Just now, blckshirt98 said: Can someone provide a second confirmation that gift cards work at both places? Super User geo g Posted March 21, 2017 Super User Posted March 21, 2017 I have a field and stream rod that I got at Dick's, and I like it a lot. 7'2", very light, MH rod.with good backbone, and a great price. I don't think we have any new stores in south Florida, I would definitely give them a try. Quote
Super User gim Posted March 21, 2017 Super User Posted March 21, 2017 Is this Field & Stream related to the magazine? Quote

The F&S brand will also be found on some ammo as well as rods and fishing accessories. As far as tackle is concerned, Jawbone is looked at as being "ours". Quote
Robeng Posted March 22, 2017 Posted March 22, 2017 Field and Stream opened in Detroit area a couple of years ago on edge of a major mall. Spring sidewalk sale for clothes is real good pricing. Inside hunting is larger than fishing, but, some good fishing gear selections. Not as much choice as BPS in my opinion, but nice to have another player nearby and better than sister company Dicks. Cabelas is putting a store in the Detroit area and Gander Mountain is going out of business here. BPS is 20 mins up the road. Like all big box stores, prices come and go thru the seasons and scheduled sales. Quote
