At the advice of many forum members I purchased some of the Owner Twist Lock worm hooks.  I used them for the first time this weekend.  First fish was landed normally and the bait was in excellent condition compared to the Gammy EWG's.  Next fish I sent the hook on the line snapped.  Retied and the same thing happened again.  Frustrated, I tied on the old Gammy EWG for the rest of the day with no problems.

Anybody have a similar experience? I really liked how the bait held up (even after one fish difference was huge) but now I have no confidence in the hook.

So  your line busted at the hook's knot?

Did you check the knot after catching the first fish?

Did you run your line over your thumbnail checking for knicks, cuts, abrasions, weak spots, etc.?

Don't blame the hook unless you have taken a Q-Tip and run it around the hook's eye. If any cotton sticks to the hook's eye then you have a damaged bag of hooks that is causing the problem.

Just asking to eliminate all other causes before blaming the hook.

What say you?

If the line snapped twice that doesn't sound like a hook issue but a line problem or knot problem. I use the owner twist lock hooks without any problems.

Pure knot failure.

Hooks with screw locks attached to the eye you must use caution not to get the line in or around the screw wire.

Yes, at the knot.  No didn't check the knot or line, I usually just do it pretty randomly.

I'll check the hooks with a Q-Tip just in case.

I just thought it was strange that I'm tying the same knot with the same line.

I guess I'll just check the line and the knot more often.

That's what I figured, I was really just looking to see if maybe there was something I'm missing.

I use a Palomar and I actually did pay close attention when tying because the line tried to get caught in the screw wire.

Thanks for the responses.  I was really looking to see if I missed something.  I'll give them another shot this weekend and heed some of the advice and I should get better results.

What often happens is the line goes around the screw wire as you try to thread it through the hook eye. The smaller diameter wire fouls the knot as you snug it up tight. Palomar requires the line to pass through the hook eye twice unless you make a loop and pinch it down and thread the loop through the hook eye, tricky part is snugging the knot down without getting it caught in the spring...difficult knot to use with screw eye hooks.

I know a premium Owner hook doesn't has any rough surfaces in the hook eye, any knot failure is more than likely operator error. Try a San Diego jam knot. I clip a cloths pin or hang a jig  onto the hook bend to add a little weight when tieing a SD jam knot onto hooks, it helps a lot. The SD jam knot allows you to see the line in the hook eye before sliding it down and snugging it tight.

I would put away the Q-tip and focus on my knot-tying.

I'm tying the same exact knot with the same line and spit to a different hook and it isn't breaking.

There's a better than even chance that the problem is behind you   :)

The line getting into the screw lock was the first thing I thought of too. I use these Owner Twistlock hooks almost exclusively and never have problems with the line breaking. BUT to make sure the screw lock doesn't interfere with my knot I screw the plastic bait onto the screw lock BEFORE I tie the hook to my line. It helps keep the screw lock out of the way.

Oh, and my knot of choice is a Trilene knot...

^^^ this ^^^. I always make sure to tie knot on hook not screw lock, and trilene knot is what I use as well.
