crankbaits and snaps?

i purchased a couple crank baits for cheap over the weekend and hope i made the right decision. I also seen a post where guys are using something similar to the link below instead of the normal barrel swivel snaps for attaching crank baits. I found a 30 pack of 00 size KVD snaps like these for $2-3 would that be the best route to go for attaching crank baits? The baits i purchases was a shad rap, kvs square bill, a couple rapala original floaters. i mostly bank fish or pier fish so I'm hoping i made the right purchase.

Personally, I don't use them.  I'm kind of lazy, and a snap discourages re tying a knot.

I take the split rings off the front of almost every bait I own and use a snap. Im also sure there's guys out there that still tie loop knots. You're on the right track for sure. That isn't the size you want tho. You want a snap that will be equivalent to the O ring you take off that will almost guarantee the bait will have the right action. You could even add the snap to the O ring and leave it on for a little bit of a different action. Majority of baits use a size 3 Split Ring on the front so comparable size snap would be either a 1 or 2.

I have snaps.Stopped using them.Just tie direct unless your changing cranks every 2 minutes.One less thing to fail.

tie right to the ring that comes with the crank bait? I plan on using 3 rods so i don't have to keep changing things a lot. my lakes are pressured a lot so sometimes i throw 2-3 things and then they hit the one for awhile and then i have to switch again so figured the snaps would help.

I agree with @dam0007, size 1 or 2 is a much better choice. Just make sure the snap you choose is a good quality one. I have seen many cheap ones fail.

I use the Owner Hyper snap welded. Not a fail yet.

I don't use them. SK's, Rapalas, Bandits I tie to rings supplied with baits I don't have any issues, none at all. On an original Rapala floater type or a jointed type I tie a trilene knot. I suppose this would be a time to use a snap but have never tried it.

# 2 snaps will work with most shallow to medium diving cranks.  Try not to and see if you like it......for the sake of a few $$$$ you can decide for yourself

I have never seen that done before.

 

I just tie straight to the ring on the bait, it doesn't take much time or effort to change out baits.

 

To each there own I guess, just seems like anouther place you could get broke off at.

what type of knot are you guys using for tying right to the bait? New guy so I just tie the snot out of stuff and hope for the best.

Use owner snaps and learn the uni knot.  You can use that knot in so many ways.  If you only learn one the uni will do it...

i prefer snap over tying to the ring as the knot could potentially slid to the middle and break.

I stopped using them for a while, and now I am using them again. They come in handy when your fishing in cold weather and your fingers are cold.

I use the Mustad KVD Duo Lock Snap on monofilament with my crankbaits.

I start with a palomar knot on the snap that I then connect to the ring supplied on the bait is delivered from the factory.

Never had a problem with it hindering any action of the bait that I could see and allows me the freedom to swap baits very quickly.

So far I'm 100% satisfied with the results.

These are what i have been using. And I do think a #2 might be better overall.

I stayed small thinking I didn't want to add weight to the suspending jerkbaits. But in all honesty I don't think it would make a hill of beans. I just was over thinking it. The #2 would make it a little easier for fat fingers like me to open and close.

I've been removing the split rings and using plain snaps on all my rigs for several decades now, with nary a problem. I do not like taking the time to retie and the need to do so is reduced with snaps (NEVER snap swivels!). I also found, through experience, that when you need to change up your baits frequently (to see what the fish wants), snaps make the process much more expedient. The only time I check my knots is after I catch a bass. That may allow me several lure changes in rapid succession, with minimal down time. JMO.

Why do you remove the split rings before attaching a snap? I've always just attached my snap directly to the split ring, but I'm curious if you've found it helped.

I remove the ring to reduce the total amount of things going on with the lure.  The owner snaps provide enough room for the action to be correct.  If you left it on I don't think it would matter and on some of my baits like the rapala shadrap I do leave them as its a pain to get the snap on the original hangar.

I use snaps on my crankbait rods and they've made changing lures much faster without sacrificing production.  In a similar effect, and relating. To a post above, I also use Lefty's Loop for certain finesse presentations as well.
