ohihunter2014 Posted March 16, 2017 Posted March 16, 2017 I have a brand new president 35 Reel and like a dummy took the spool off and the little white and black washers fell off so after putting them back on 3 times until the drag clicker worked right now the reel has a grind noise to it. I'm not sure of it did it before I took the spool off or not. It's like it hits on a full rotation like metal to metal Sorry grinding is on reverse and squeak on forwards when reeling. Quote
Super User fishnkamp Posted March 16, 2017 Super User Posted March 16, 2017 Take it back. If all you wanted to do was remove the front nut assembly and remove the spool then you would never even see the washers you are referring to. Take it back and exchange it, it was probably defective missing some kind or part. I own a bunch of these reels and can remove the spool without doing anything with the drag washers at all. 3 Quote

Yeah I thought it was odd when I lifted the spool both washers fell right off in my lap. It's going back today. Thanks. 1 Quote
Fun4Me Posted March 16, 2017 Posted March 16, 2017 Are you talking about the drag washers, or the little gear and white washer on the shaft of the reel when you removed the spool? 1 Quote

I put them back on 2 times and the drag wouldn't click when the line was pulled so i repositioned them and it worked but whines and grinds. sounds like its the part of the reel that spins. Quote

Do you have the exploded view and parts list that came with your reel? Also does the reel make the noise when the spool is off and you wind the handle? Quote

The whining noise is coming from the spool but the grinding is coming from the reel body where the part that spins the bail connects to the body. it only grinds on reverse not forward. haven't tried it with the spool off though. I would say that if you can exchange it for another one, go that route. If not, we could probably figure out the problem. I'm guessing that the spool shaft may not have enough lubricant and is causing the whining there (assuming you got the washers back in their correct orientation). The grinding could be from the backreel button not fully engaged, but that is a guess as well. 1 Quote
ohihunter2014 Posted March 17, 2017 Author Posted March 17, 2017 well I got home and played with the reel a little bit and made sure the washers were put back right and they had lube on them per the manual and they were but the grinding which only happens here and there came back and I pin pointed it to the body of the reel where the arms that hold the bail sit and rotate. I took the spool off and spun it both ways for several minutes and it still did it but it would be far and few between. went back to the store and they didn't have the combo I had so they swapped reels. When I went back to the register the girl says they aren't same reels they look different. I couldn't tell but I told her the guy in the back gave me the 35 series and showed her they were both 35 series. my buddy says he thinks they might put factory seconds on the combos to be able to sell them real cheap is why it looked different. no funny noises coming from this one so far Quote
Super User fishnkamp Posted March 17, 2017 Super User Posted March 17, 2017 I do not believe it was a second, just a defective one. My wife and I fish a bunch of these and they are usually battle tanks. We fish some that are over ten years old and some that are a year old. Quote
tander Posted March 17, 2017 Posted March 17, 2017 Not saying this what happen, but this happen to me. Line got caught behind the spool when I was fishing. I took the spool off and when I did washers fell off. Well I put them back on and the reel never felt like it suppose to. When I was cleaning out the boat, I found another washer that I had not put back in the reel. I had another reel similar, so I took it apart to get the first one back working correctly. Worked great after that. Quote
