Super User lmbfisherman Posted March 15, 2017 Super User Posted March 15, 2017 I'm about to pull the trigger on a pond hopping combo for me and sometimes my wife. I was going to buy a 843C but I noticed they have a 844C, what I was curious about is that the range on the 844C was 1/4 oz to 1 oz while the 843C was 1/4 oz to 3/4 oz. It threw me off, because I was thinking, wouldn't the bigger range make it a better all around rod? Does anyone own both or fish them both? All I know other than the power difference that the 844C was stiffer. Is it too stiff for the lower range? My wife or I would probably be fishing baits around 3/8 oz to 1/2 oz most of the time. If someone can provide me their insight it would be greatly appreciated! Quote
Super User smalljaw67 Posted March 15, 2017 Super User Posted March 15, 2017 Go with the 843C, Loomis specs are a little confusing but the numbers are pretty straight forward. I have no experience with the E6X but I know the IMX MBR rods in the 843C and 844C have a big difference. The mag bass tapers are excellent and they are fast actions but there is some nice tip with the 843, the 844 will feel stiffer and I'm more comfortable with a 3/8oz weight with the 844. For me it would be simple, if I'm spending most of my time slinging lures in the 3/8oz to 1/2oz range I'm going with the 843, the only way I'd go to the 844 is if the fishing was going to be in moderate to heavy cover most of the time and I'm not just talking some grass, I'm thinking thick grass and heavy brush. I think the 843 will be more versatile for pond hopping, it will allow you to use a wide selection of baits in a good size range for ponds with the ability to use treble hook baits with much more efficiency than the 844. 3 Quote
kschultz76 Posted March 15, 2017 Posted March 15, 2017 Thanks for this post and thanks Smalljaw for your response. I've been looking at some Loomis rods and this summary was helpful and informative. Quote
Poolshark Posted March 15, 2017 Posted March 15, 2017 I've used my 843 for everything from small jigs, to senkos, to spinnerbaits and lipless crankbaits and it works for all of them. I will tell you this though about the e6x series. I owned one and I wasn't happy with it for the money. I feel like it is somewhat heavy of a rod as compared some of the rods that cost almost half as much. Case in point, I'd find myself reaching for one of my carbonlites, mojos or veritas before the e6x for the same techniques solely based on comfort of use. They are lighter and better balanced. I ended up selling the e6x for an imx and was much happier with it. If I bought it over again I would go straight for the imx for an extra 100 dollars or I would just buy one of the other rods I mentioned and save some cash. I'm not bashing the e6x. It's a decent rod...But for the price there so many better options available and you would save money long term by just buying the right stick now instead of upgrading it later. Sorry for the rant, just thought I'd add my 2 cents. You'll like the mag bass taper either way. The 843 is my favorite rod taper/power Quote
JohnDHenry Posted March 15, 2017 Posted March 15, 2017 I have an 843 and l use it for anything from 1/4 oz texas rigs to 1/2 oz jigs. It performs perfectly Quote
