WdyCrankbait Posted March 15, 2017 Posted March 15, 2017 Hey everyone, I wanted to ask you guys for some advice. My wife and I are planning a vacation to New York state the second week in July and I wanted to do a day float fly fishing trip, while she wants to do some spa day. Since she is not writing this post, I want to get recommendations for location and possible guides up there I should check in out that could fore fill my needs. Any help is greatly appreciated! (I know this is not for awhile off, but I am a planner and dont really care what websites say, only the people that live in the area say.) Thanks, Wdy Quote
Super User clayton86 Posted March 16, 2017 Super User Posted March 16, 2017 Where about in NY? No guides that I know of but if it's WNY I can show you some spots or point you in he right direction. Oak orchard and johnsons are both loaded with smallies. Both creeks are in orleans county Quote
WdyCrankbait Posted March 16, 2017 Author Posted March 16, 2017 I think it will be all over. My wife has never been to NY state and she has the typical idea the state of NY will be all city. I have been up there a couple of times and would like to show her differently. I talked to DVT tonight and he recommended Hancock and upper Delaware, but from there we will go west to Cooperstown, Ithaca, Finger lakes, etc. (Plus, I imagine DVT will want a reload of some flies I tied for him a year or so ago so I will catch up with him.) Thanks for the offer to help, Wdy Quote
Super User clayton86 Posted March 16, 2017 Super User Posted March 16, 2017 No problem, if you venture towards Niagara Falls you will be fairly close to the oak and johnsons both are roughly 45 minutes east of the falls. When in the finger lakes check out fuzzy guppies between Seneca and cayuga at Waterloo harbor he's got kayaks you can rent and float the Seneca canal and there's no shortage of smallies there. 2 Quote
Super User Jar11591 Posted March 20, 2017 Super User Posted March 20, 2017 If you are visiting NY, you have to visit the Adirondack Mountains. Beautiful mountain range with all kinds of lakes, rivers and streams and 90% of these waters are loaded with smallmouth. Lake George, Great Sacandaga, Schroon Lake as well as the Hudson & Schroon rivers are all great options when targeting smallmouths, and there are countless other small bodies of water that have some great fishing. I know there are more than a couple bass guides on Lake George, and I assume some for Great Sacandaga as well. If your wife's idea of NYS is that its all city, then the Adirondacks are the perfect place to show her its not! 2 Quote
Turkey sandwich Posted March 20, 2017 Posted March 20, 2017 New York State is huge. I would suggest NOT trying to cover all of it in a week. The Adirondacks, Catskills, Finger lakes, western NY, Thousand Islands, etc are all great destinations with great fishing - traditional and on the fly. 1 Quote
Subaqua Adinterim Posted April 6, 2017 Posted April 6, 2017 There are so many possibilities. I think you and your wife will really enjoy your trip. There are so many things to see and do, you may end up fishing less than you planned. You have no doubt received some good guide recommendations from DVT for the Catskills. The Adirondacks, Finger Lakes, St. Lawrence River (Thousand Islands), Niagra Falls are also fantastic as mentioned above. For sight seeing, I recommend the Uncle Sam boat tour in Alexandria Bay, in the Adirondacks there is a nice boat tour at Blue Mountain Lake as well as the Adirondack Museum which is located there. Really so much to see and do; one week would not be enough time. My wife and I traveled to Smokey Mountain National Park a few years ago. I was excited to fish, but once I got there I spent most of my time being a tourist and taking in all I could in this beautiful area. I didn't fish until the last day and just for a few hours. It was good that I had my stuff with me so I could do it, but overall the fishing was the least memorable part of the trip. Best of luck with your planning; hoping that you and your wife enjoy your stay in NY. PS You can get some nice rental rates for a few days on beautiful houses through the rental by owner web sites. We like to do this especially when we go to the ADKs. 2 Quote
