SoFloSully Posted March 14, 2017 Posted March 14, 2017 I am from south florida and I am going to college in Ashland Virginia now, its about 20 minutes north of Richmond. I am trying to find some places to fish for bass from the bank that are close to my area within 30 minutes if possible. If anyone has any nice public lakes/ponds that I could go to that would be helpful. Also if you have any tips for fishing up here compared to fishing down south I am open to advice and would appreciate it. Quote
WdyCrankbait Posted March 15, 2017 Posted March 15, 2017 SoFlo, Welcome to the forums! And Congrats on attending Macon (I assume that is your college). But, some quick places to look for, Echo Lake (down 295, off Staples Mill), and probably run to Pony Pasture, or Huguenot Park (down 95 S to Chippenham through the city to Cary St. and take that to across the Huguenot Bridge there just up river from the bridge, that might be a stretch. Since you're from So Florida I assume you have bigger heavier rods say for flipping. VA has a lot of finesse fishing tatics employed for bass. But, to help you out, green pumpkin is one of the most successful colors around here. If you have a spinning rod, definitely get out on the James and wade for smallies when the James warms up. Also, go to Green Top, they know their stuff and have a HUGE selection. Hope that helps! Wdy Quote

TravisVirginiaAngler Posted March 17, 2017 Posted March 17, 2017 Definitely GreenTop. Best fishing selection/knowledge. If you're already in Ashland... a little more north and you've got Lake Anna. There's a nuclear plant side with warm water year round, and a natural side where temps vary based on temps. Welcome to Richmond! 1 Quote
Super User Sam Posted March 21, 2017 Super User Posted March 21, 2017 Yikes! Randy-Mac! This means Sully can read and write. And he can walk to the BPS store anytime he wants. I bet you could not get into the University of Florida because your parents are married. Great selection of a college. Safe environment and the girls are pretty, too. Great having you with us. I think you will find the fishing up this way a tad under what you do in Florida. But we do pretty good here in Virginia. Sully, get a copy of the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries booklet, Freshwater Fishing in Virginia. This booklet gives you all the places you can fish. Of course, there are other places not listed and we can help you locate those locations. BPS and Green Top have copies. We need for you to introduce yourself to us and let us know what type of watercraft you brought with you; have you ever fished tidal waters; do you know your Virginia special rules, like having a throw cushion on your deck; making sure you have your Virginia fishing license which may be a small problem unless you have a Virginia drivers license; your level of experience bass fishing; confirming you drove up here and have a vehicle at your disposal to drive to the places to fish; and who knows what else you want to share with us. We can then give you more specific help. Welcome to the Forum and welcome to Virginia. You picked a great school and you can enjoy your time off from studying by fishing some local ponds and lakes. By the way, when you hike to the BPS store, ask for Conner. Conner knows all about bass fishing and he is an excellent bass fisherman. Also, ask for Mike Gunn. Mike is also an excellent bass fisherman and these guys may be able to help you. Tell them Sam sent you. As for joining a bass club, Richmond Bassmasters fishes 8 tournaments a year. We already hit Lake Gaston and are pulling for our Buggs Island tournament tomorrow night (Wednesday, March 22nd) at Debbie's Kitchen at 7 PM: 13155 Mountain Rd Glen Allen, VA Phone number (804) 752-2432 Dues are $110 and include the BASS national and Virginia federation dues. $6 for the optional annual big fish pot. We are accepting nonboaters. Sorry, but we must charge the full $110 even though you have missed one tournament. Give joining the club some thought. We fish on Saturday's and sometimes on Sunday's. Great guys and you will learn a lot and get to find the boat ramps and fish some of the local waters from Buggs Island to the local lakes and rivers. And remember, Geaux Tigers!!!!!!!! 1 Quote

I will go get that booklet and read up on that. I don't have a boat and I don't have a car here at the moment so I am pretty limited. I usually catch a ride and go with whoever I know that is going fishing. I do plan on driving up next semester. I would also be interested in joining the bass club if I had the time, but I am playing football here so I don't have much time for that lol. Thanks for the info, next time I end up at BPS I will try to find Conor and Mike and talk to them. 1 Quote
Super User Choporoz Posted March 21, 2017 Super User Posted March 21, 2017 I don't get to Ashland all too often, but Green Top and Appomatox River Co. are worthy destinations! https://www.paddleva.com/ Quote
