I got a new spinning reel(pflueger president)/rod a few weeks ago. I've been fishing with it twice and noticed when I cast the line twists itself about 6 inches above the bail. I run my finger through it and all is good but it is annoying. I don't if I messed it up during a cast or what, but how do I fix this? Line I'm using is 8lb Berkley Vanish fluorocarbon.

There is no way to avoid twist on spinning reels -- it is just part of the design of the reel that they put one full twist into the line every time the bail goes around on a retrieve. You can do things to make twist less disruptive and more manageable, like using limp line (like lower test rating, or braid) rather than stiff line, avoiding letting the line slack too much after a cast, and you can let out twisted line to untwist it (for instance, let out a bunch of line into the water with nothing tied on, and drag it behind a watercraft for a little bit), but you can't prevent the twist from accumulating as you retrieve.

Most fluoro will cause issues.  Get rid of it. My wife and I fish the President reels and they are great reels. Here is what I have gone to after 40 years of fishing. This approach works great for panfish, bass stripers and big cats.

First go get a spool of Stren Original Clear Blue mono in say 10 or 12 pound test. I fish 30 and 35 sized Presidents and I usually use 14 pound Stren. It cost about $8 at Walmart.  Next get a 300 yard spool of Berkley Original fused FireLine.  I like it in 14 pound test, it is equal to most 6 pound mono.  Spool the reel half way up with the mono.. Then fill it up the rest of the way with the braid. Make sure you leave enough space do not over fill it.  Lastly tie on a 4 foot leader made of either P Line CXX moss green in 6 or 8 pound test. You can fish anywhere with that combo.  If you fish for larger fish like stripers and cats I jump up to 10 pound test in the same moss green. Ten pound moss green CXX breaks at around 23 pound so 6 or 8 are strong enough.  I fish off colored tidal water as well as gin clear lakes in TN and KY so do not worry about needing fluoro, but if you feel you do then go to P LIne Halo in 8 pound test.  Learn to tie the double uni or uni to uni knot to join the lines together. If you really want.

Here are a couple of other things to keep in mind. Always flip the bail over by hand and I usually do it as I lift the rod a bit to make sure the line is under tension as I flip the bail over. I do it so often I do not even think about it.  Next NEVER EVER reel as a fish is pulling drag. You will introduce a ton of line twist.

Thank you. I will definitely switch out the fluorocarbon for mono or braid. Anyone know if braided line is good/ok for jig heads and slip bobbers?

Amazing tips here. I will stop letting the slack let out too much after casting. Next time I go fishing I will drag my line (with no lure) in the water to let it untwist.

fishnkamp- I will have to re-read your post a few times. I'm new to this so not sure if I quite understand. One this is that I'm pretty positive I won't be using fluoro anymore. So if I want to spool two different lines on, I tie them together halfway through spooling the first line?

Again thank you for the tips. They are helping me a bunch!

I use braid for everything I fish but, with a slip bobber, the bobber stop, at least the ones I've used will not stay in place on the thin braids I use.

All good advice.

Also......if you are on a boat, take the lure off and let most of the line out while heading back to to ramp/dock.

That will get a lot of twist out

I tried fluoro on my spinning reel once. I got line twist every third or fourth cast. I now use 20# PowerPro braid with a 6-8# Fluoro leader on one and a copolymer called Silver Thread AN40 in 6# on the other No More line twists
