ohihunter2014 Posted March 12, 2017 Posted March 12, 2017 I just purchased a 35 series president spinning reel and 7ft medium fast rod and it says 8-12lbs line and 1/4-3/4oz baits. I picked up several rapala shad raps with a small bill and top water originals but don't see any weight sizes on the crankbaits. I also got a couple packs of 7'' power worms and chigger craws and not sure what they weight either. How do you know what's compatible and what's not? Quote
CTBassin860 Posted March 12, 2017 Posted March 12, 2017 I'd be throwing soft plastics and light topwater with it. As far as compatibility,do you mean weight wise? Stay in the 1/4 to 3/4 range and you should be all good.Go to Wal-Mart and buy a cheap food scale to weigh your baits if you need to figure that out. Quote

Super User MIbassyaker Posted March 12, 2017 Super User Posted March 12, 2017 Shad raps are on the lighter end of the lure wt range, around 1/4oz. Same with the power worms and chigger craws, which should be around 1/4-3/8oz by themselves, not including the hook and any weight you fish it with (like a bullet weight, jig, or jig head of some kind). Not sure what you mean by "top water originals". A medium power rod that can handle 1/4-3/4oz should be very suitable for many different things. Quote

I believe he's talking about the rapala original floater. 2 Quote

jr231 Posted March 12, 2017 Posted March 12, 2017 One of my favorite baits . Many species can be taken on shad raps and original floaters.! Good choice and easily one of the best value hard baits you can get. 2 Quote
CTBassin860 Posted March 12, 2017 Posted March 12, 2017 I'm guessing 3/8-5/8 is going to be the rods sweet spot. Quote
Super User fishnkamp Posted March 12, 2017 Super User Posted March 12, 2017 That reel will last you a long time if you take care of it. My wife and I fish a bunch of the 30 and 35 size Presidents. Some are over 10 years old and feel fantastic even after catching many good size bass, stripers, and catfish. A typical 7 foot medium spinning rod is as versatile as it gets basically. You could get away with fishing a bait like the Reaction Innovation Skinny Dippers on a belly weighted swimbait hook, small to mid sized cranks and traps and many other baits. Go enjoy your new combo. 1 Quote
