Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted March 11, 2017 Global Moderator Posted March 11, 2017 I have a few different baitcasting combos I use for jerkbaits, but I also fish them on spinning gear. My baitcasting rods I use are 6' 2" M/XF, 6' 3" M/MF, 6' 6" M/F, and 6' 8" M/F. Quote
rangerjockey Posted March 11, 2017 Posted March 11, 2017 I have 3 stickbait rods in the boat now. My favorites are the Falcon weightless worm rod and the Mike McClelland signature. Also have one of the new *** m. blacks in a 6'10" medium fast that is going to be really good. I think they will be available by the end of the month. The good thing about a good stickbait rod is they are fairly versatile , you can also throw small topwaters and crankbaits. Quote
LOZSteve Posted March 11, 2017 Posted March 11, 2017 I really enjoy fishing jerkbaits on my Megabass Orochi XX Jerkbait special, 6'8" rod with a Chronarch 50e an 10lb Fluorocarbon line. The other rods I use are backups so they are medium/fast 7 foot rods that I use typically for other applications. I like the shorter rod for sweeping down versus to the side. Quote
CTBassin860 Posted March 11, 2017 Posted March 11, 2017 im using a 6'7" MF casting rod and an 8.1:1 reel Quote
JDNKC Posted March 11, 2017 Posted March 11, 2017 I like a short rod. I use the 6'3" g loomis jerkbait series. I used to use a an IMX 6'6" MH, and like both options. Quote
Super User fishnkamp Posted March 11, 2017 Super User Posted March 11, 2017 A shorter rod works best and a rod with a shorter handle helps too. My go to setup for these baits is an Okuma 6'6" rod I had a rod builder shorten the back area between the split grip. That is a spinning rod. It is perfect for finesse jerk baiting. Anytime the water is cold and you want to move the bait slower, and use light fluoro line, then spinning is the way to go. Once we get say 60 plus in water temps, like early spring, pre or post spawn, and again in early fall then I use a faster presentation and a baitcaster. I like my Abu Garcia Ike delay series 6'4" jerkbait rod. It was built with a shorter split grip handle in order to avoid hitting your arm when jerking the bait. Quote
Attila Posted March 12, 2017 Posted March 12, 2017 Shorter rod lengths are definitely better when it comes to jerkbait rods. I currently use a 7' Daiwa Tatula MF action spinning rod and it works well. I'll be happier when Daiwa puts out a Tatula in the 6'6" length as I feel it will give me even more control over the jerkbaits I throw. I use a 2500 Procyon to round out the combo. Might I suggest changing your line setup? I have found that I control the action of my lures when running braid to a fluro leader. It imparts more action to the lure given there is no stretch involved and that is very important to me regardless of the water temperatures I'm throwing baits in. Cheers, and have a great season. I remember what it is and almost bought one myself but hesitated too long. I was concerned it might be too soft but it was a heckuva deal regardless. Quote

Smokinal Posted March 13, 2017 Posted March 13, 2017 I'm using a med 6'6" spinning rod with a size 30 President spooled with 10 lb braid to 10 lb fluoro leader. I, too, feel I get better action with the no memory braid than I would with all fluoro. I have tried the jerkbait on a casting rod but get better distance with a spinning rod which is very important with jerkbaits. OP, sounds like the setup you have is fine if it's comfortable to you. I too would switch to braid tho. Quote
JDNKC Posted March 13, 2017 Posted March 13, 2017 This is the jerkbait rod I use. It is effortless and super light. The 6'3" is perfect. http://www.gloomis.com/content/g-loomis/us/en/home/conventional/rods1/bass/bass/JERKBAIT_SERIES.html Quote

I love it, been my #1 jerkbait rod so far this year. I was afraid it might be too soft but couldn't pass it up for the price. I like the full sized guides, because I'm often dealing with ice and they handle it much better than the micro guides on my other jerkbait rods. The handle took a minute to get use to, but now it feels very comfortable. I've been fishing 78 pointers and 110 sized baits on it no problems. Quote
Super User WIGuide Posted March 13, 2017 Super User Posted March 13, 2017 Nothing wrong with the setup you're using for jerkbaits. The short rod helps to work the bait easier no matter whether it's spinning or casting. Personally I throw most of mine on 6'6" M/F casting rod with 12 lb fluoro. I've got a few spinning rods I'd switch to if I was throwing a smaller jerkbait or if it got really windy. Quote
