Hopslam Posted March 11, 2017 Posted March 11, 2017 I want to start using snaps instead of tying direct to crankbaits and jerkbaits. I have heard the action is better with a snap. I always tie direct to the split ring on the lure and it has produced fine. However, I would like to use snaps to switch baits and colors more efficiently. What are the advantages to using a snap vs tying direct to the split ring on a crank/jerkbait? Do you attach the snap to the split ring, or do you remove the split ring and attach it to eye on the lure? Quote

If not, and for other lures, I just attach it to the splitring if it comes with one, if it doesnt, snap it directly. Quote
Super User Dwight Hottle Posted March 11, 2017 Super User Posted March 11, 2017 You can do it either way. If weight is a consideration you could remove the split ring & attach the snap direct. When using a snap you don't have to worry about the knot getting worn from the split ring opening. Baits work more freely with a snap. There are numerous manufactures who supply snaps on their bait from the factory. I have always used snaps on jerk baits, cranks & swim baits. Just retie daily or more often if needed depending on wear. 1 Quote

I might try removing the ring and using a snap to the eye on the bait. When retrieving a crankbait will it make it more erratic? Quote

I too have been thinking about going to snaps, but trying to find one with real positive reviews is challenging.....what works for you, al Quote
Super User Dwight Hottle Posted March 11, 2017 Super User Posted March 11, 2017 I use #1 owner hyper welded snaps for jerkbaits & #2 for cranks & swimbaits. The #1 is rated for 33lbs and #2 is rated for 46lbs. I have never had a failure using these. 4 Quote
Super User Angry John Posted March 11, 2017 Super User Posted March 11, 2017 (edited) I use the same owner snaps and to honest they get mixed up and i dont really track what i have on. I have not seen an effect with this snap and changing of the ballance or suspension of a jerkbait. I leave the factory ring on a jerkbait and remove them from cranks and attach unless further tuning is required. I have the largest of the owner snaps before i knew the sizes and they are very big. I have thrown large baits for pike with them but not for bass use unless you were going 10 xd or something like that. Edited March 11, 2017 by Angry John Quote
Mumbly Posted March 11, 2017 Posted March 11, 2017 As others have said, you can do it either way. My only advice is to use a quality snap. Quote

Yes get a high quality snap On my first bass of this year I got lucky when this snap let got the bass was on shore so it didnt get away but here is pic of the snap. The fish was 17" 2-1/2# and the snap failed. The rest of those snaps have been tossed in the garbage. 1 Quote
mllrtm79 Posted March 13, 2017 Posted March 13, 2017 I use the Norman speed clips attached to split ring on my crankbait and topwater rods, I've never had one fail. They're especially easier to use than getting a 110 through a knot loop lol. I retie them regularly, and keep an eye on the last few inches of line for nicks. One annoying thing is trying to attach to some of the lures with wider lips, I think the oval splits make it easier than attaching directly, in that case. Quote
