Just read that Gander Mountain has just filed for protection under our bankruptcy laws.

Hope they can come out it a stronger company.

They just built a bunch of higher end stores and accumulated a bunch debt.  Either they were hoping to be bought out by a large company and it didn't happen or they were hoping to rebuild, file bankruptcy and then come out of it in better shape.  Something doesn't make a lot of sense with their business model and long term sustainability.

Hope they can recover and come back stronger. Competition is normally a good thing for consumers.

With the exception of the ever growing list of "excluded" brands from their sales I've been really pleased with all of my online orders there over the years (no stores in CA so no sales tax). Competition with Cabela's and BPS is a good thing... not real excited if they were to eventually go out of business with the BPS-Cabela's merger on the horizon.

I, for one, long for the days of the local store that had everything you needed.  These big box companies and internet stores are getting a little old for me.

Old guy rant over.

It's no wonder why they filed. I got an email coupon code yesterday for $20 off a $50 purchase......Is the liquidation starting????

our local Gander Mountain has a store wide 15% off sale but most of their stuff is so high it's like paying regular price everywhere else, after the discount.

Had an interesting experience at Gander Mountain yesterday. When I entered the door there was a bin of lures marked half off about 10 feet from the door. One other guy was rooting thru it so I joined in. As I was shuffling baits around a young lady about 20 or so, carrying a designer bag, wearing big sunglasses and with manicured and painted nails came over and started sifting through the pile with us 2 guys. She had something in mind cause like us she was pushing aside baits and looking at the colors and turning the packaging over to read the back. After finding a few goodies for my collection I moved along, checking out the other lures. After that I was headed to the guns but before I made it there I found another area with lures and more "bargain" bins and, sure enough, the young lady had beat me to it and was rifling through it like a champ. So much so that she hit the store worker with a pack of soft plastics as she was tossing them aside. I'm telling you she knew what she was doing. I wouldn't be surprised if she had a truck with a Tackle Warehouse sticker in the back window.

Not ever happy to see any store go under but Gander Mountain's business model didn't seem to make much sense.  RARELY did the local store ever have more than a smattering of cars in the parking lot and when I asked an employee, they said that most of their profits were in firearm sales-which is fine and dandy except they had ALL this overhead which HAD to be eating all their profits.  They (Gander) never really seemed to be "hungry" to make sales.
