kroberts9 Posted March 8, 2017 Posted March 8, 2017 what's up all I already have a normal crankbait setup but I'm looking to dedicate a set up for lipless here is what I got 7'2MH moderate a Lews 6:4:1 reel spooled with 65lb braid should I unspool and go with 20lb fluro? or I'm I over thinking and switch my normal cranks with the lipless on that set up which is 7'1M moderate glass rod ardent elite 6:5:1 spooled 15lb fluro all ideas welcome Quote
papajoe222 Posted March 8, 2017 Posted March 8, 2017 Keep the braid on, it'll help when you go to clear the bait from weeds and the extra sensitivity is always a plus. Keep your drag setting on the light side and drop your thumb on the spool when jerking to clear weeds or if you feel you're missing fish because of a poor hook set.. Don't worry about line visibility as you'll be fishing the lipless with constant movement whether it's horizontal or vertical . 2 Quote
kroberts9 Posted March 8, 2017 Author Posted March 8, 2017 that's what I thought but since I have barely started lipless I wanted a second opinion. even though my 7'2 tatula isnt glass I should be good since it is a composite right? Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted March 8, 2017 Global Moderator Posted March 8, 2017 Are you fishing a lot of grass? I fish mine on a 7' MH/F Ethos/Kastking Assassin with 15lb Big Game and I can rip it out of most grass just fine with that setup. I wouldn't want to fish one where I felt I needed braid to rip through unless you're running the edges of thick grass where you might need it to cut through if a fish eats and buries in the grass. 2 Quote
kroberts9 Posted March 8, 2017 Author Posted March 8, 2017 I would say light grass nothing crazy. more or less it would be used on main lake points, steepdrops and so on Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted March 8, 2017 Global Moderator Posted March 8, 2017 I'm not a fan of braid for moving baits like that. Bass have an easy time tossing lipless baits anyways, no reason to tear a bigger hole to make it even easier. I've not had many light strikes on a lipless bait, so sensitivity isn't an issue. Lots of guys fish them on braid though and if it's been working for you I'd stick with it. If you do decide to try something else, no need to spend the money on fluoro, mono or copolymer will work just fine. Quote
Super User Fishes in trees Posted March 8, 2017 Super User Posted March 8, 2017 My lipless crank rod is one of the few that I own that I paid full retail for. I came across a Falcon Bucco Trap Caster one day at Walmart and just had to have it. It is a 7; Med Heavy -ish rod that can throw baits a long ways and is sensitive enough that I can set the hooks a long way from the boat. I use a Calcutta 200 TEGT reel filled with 17 lb Iron Silk. I've found that line to be a great abrasion resistant reaction bait line. I'd recommend that trap caster rod to anyone. I swap out a similar reel with 10 lb line and it makes a decent wiggle wart rod. Quote
Poolshark Posted March 8, 2017 Posted March 8, 2017 i use these baits a lot and, like you, I wanted a setup for lipless baits only. I've been through so many rods trying to get it figured out. I usually shy away from pro signature gear, but after a lot of searching I think my favorite lipless rod is the Mike iaconelli series lipless special. Composite, soft tip, but has a good backbone and faster action for ticking the grass. It does best with the 1/4 to 1/2 ounce baits. Its at least worth a look. I've been very happy with mine. Another good rod is the Cbr 845. I own one in the e6x line and it does well. As far as line goes, I'm usually in grass and braid is fine, but I like 17 pound floro or mono. I'll swap to an hg reel with braid if the grass is thick. Quote
crypt Posted March 8, 2017 Posted March 8, 2017 I use a 7-3 abu veritas med act. with a promax 3, 15llb. big game. mono seems work better for me so that's why I use it. braid seems a bit to much for my liking. 1 Quote
kroberts9 Posted March 8, 2017 Author Posted March 8, 2017 all good stuff for sure thanks I think the tatula will be the rod and I guess the 65lb braid is coming off and 15lb sniper will be applied Quote
Super User Jar11591 Posted March 8, 2017 Super User Posted March 8, 2017 I use a 7' MH/F with a 6:1 reel spooled with 15lb Big Game. 1 Quote
