Wewlad Posted March 8, 2017 Posted March 8, 2017 I am curious as to what you guys spool your Calcuttas up with. I have a 200GTB I have spooled up with 30lb PowerPro braid, a 100GT TE with some cheap 10lb mono on, and I have a Calcutta Conquest 50 in the shop, but not currently spooled. What do you guys prefer? Do you ever spool Your Calcuttas with Fluorocarbon? I was considering throwing some Sunline Fluoro on the 50 when I she comes back. Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted March 8, 2017 Global Moderator Posted March 8, 2017 My line selection is based on what I'm using the reel for, not the reel itself. So what are you using them for? 2 Quote
Super User Catt Posted March 8, 2017 Super User Posted March 8, 2017 Berkley Big Game 15# Mean Green Tried fluorocarbons, poor shock absorption, poor abrasion resistance, breaks easily. 1 Quote
mrpao Posted March 8, 2017 Posted March 8, 2017 I only have the 50 size in my regular Calcuttas. I usually only put mono on them since i use them for slower reaction style lures. I use big game and p-line most of the time on them. Anywhere from 8 to 15 pounds. Quote
Wewlad Posted March 8, 2017 Author Posted March 8, 2017 I'll be using the 50 as a Light Jerkbait and cranking rod. Finesse in mind. So would fluoro be ideal? Quote
Super User MickD Posted March 9, 2017 Super User Posted March 9, 2017 Anything but flourcarbon. Too much of a hassle, especially for non-experts with baitcasters. Mono of 12-15 will be the best casting, and will not sink, so will be good for surface lures. Braid has better sensitivity, casts quite well, neutral buoyancy, lasts about forever, and at about 30 or more pound test it casts well and is really strong. I like Suffix primium braid. Quote
Super User WRB Posted March 9, 2017 Super User Posted March 9, 2017 Jerk baits you want a line that doesn't sink, cast smoothly and stays tight on the spool while you work the lure. FC line sinks, braid loosens so that leaves mono type line. Sunline Defier Armillo 11 lb fits your needs if you want a top tier Nylon mono, 10 or 12 lb Big Game if you want a good line at inexpensive price point 1/4 lb spools and change it often. I use 25 lb Defier Armillo for my expensive big swimbait on the larger size Calcutta's, good line. 12 lb BG for most of my crankbait and smaller size top water applications because I change my line often. Wewlad Posted March 9, 2017 Author Posted March 9, 2017 Thank you guys for the input. I'll keep a look out for the Sunline Defier Armilla, WRB. Quote
Silas Posted March 9, 2017 Posted March 9, 2017 I have ALL of the reels you mentioned: fluoro was tried on all and the stiffness of the fluoro and casting limitations made me take it off. Wasn't cheap fluoro either: Sniper , Shooter, Tatsu: all very expensive. The Armillo Defier in 11 pound on the 200GTB worked well . Surprisingly, YOZURI Hybrid worked well in all. Used 6 lb in the 50 and 10 lb in the larger ones. Casting, abrasion resistance, limpness all good. Only one I put BRAID on was my CONQUEST 50S with shallow Spool Put 12 lb white TASLINE from Paulus in Australia $40 for about 125 yards. ABSOLUTELY SUPERB on the S. paired it with a St Croix Gulfcoast Wader that St Croix had for a fantastic sale on their website. Ordered it direct from St Croix. While the Calcutta 100 G TE was Ann extremely smooth reel along with the latest Conquest 100, the smoothest and most effortless casting is my Conquest 100DC. I LOVE MY ROUND REELS! Now Ive added a couple of RYOGA 1016's that are just as smooth if not smoother than the Conquests. Hard to believe. Quote
Wewlad Posted March 11, 2017 Author Posted March 11, 2017 I have heard good things about YOZURI hybrid. I'll give it a try. I enjoy all fishing reels, but there is something about round reels that I really like. I'll be getting a Conquest 100HG soon to add to the arsenal. Those Ryoga's do quite nice Silas. Perhaps one day! Quote
