Hi, I was wondering if anyone else here that owns a tat type R has a screeching noise, it seems the spool is rubbing against the frame. Hoping someone can chime in and verify if it is an easy fix or should I exchange the reel for another one. Thanks.

Woah. I was about to buy a CT. I think I changed my mind... For now at least.

Is this a brand new reel? Has it done it from the beginning? I would remove the side plate and spool. Inspect the spool and lip, make sure there is nothing like a bit of dirt or debris. Reassemble it and see if the noise is still there. If it is then either exchange it for another if possible or have someone like DVT repair it. Maybe you got the one in x that have a defect.

Nameiztaken I would not let one question about one reel deter me from buying a CT. First he is not even asking about a CT.  The Tatula Type R is a completely different reel, a different size body and spool.  I personally own with 4 Tatula Type Rs and have fished them hard for several years. I also own 2 Tatula CTs and an Exceler. All of these reels have performed flawlessly.

So I decided to spool it and try it out, turns out that CT's have a very particular spool tension knob. I had to tighten it almost completely in order for a 3/8 oz weight to fall slowly, and the noise appears to be gone. I have a habit of loosening the spool tension completely as well as the star drag, but don't know if it is necessary. Did a few casts like a crazy man out on the street and I must say I was impressed, backlashes seem a thing of the past and the noise seems to be gone. The mag force magnetic cast control is nuts. So I guess this one is solved, any comments are welcome though. Thanks Bass Forums.

Title says "Tatula ct R", anyway, I decided to look up the known problems for the CT, found a couple but they both had easy fixes. Not to hijack this thread, but if you have a Curado I by chance, how is the ct compared?

I wouldn't worry, about it, just to clear things up, I am talking about a CT type R and I believe anyone can make a mistake, Daiwas have a sweet reputation and after tightening the spool it seems to be ok. So give one a go.

Thanks, lurk here a lot, but as time progresses more stuff keeps popping up so I post more.

BTW, is it better to loosen the spool tension or does it not make a difference when storing reels?

I dont loosen it, and havent really thought about it (or noticed any problems). I do however loosen the drag.

I have a Tatula CT, Tatula Type R and Tatula Tactical and none make any weird sounds. They are all fantastic reels.

As far as tension, I actually loosen the tension all the way till the spool is a little loose, then I give it a slow turn just till the spool no longer jiggles. So it is fairly loose. I set my brakes anywhere between 2-8 out of 20 depending on wind. I fish anything from 1/16oz up on it with no issue.

Read the manual. You don't adjust the cast control on these like you do every other reel. Different animal.

I'll take another look. I haven't had any issues though.

??These state, Tighten cast control just enough to eliminate side to side play in spool. Set brake to 20 and gradually work your way down.

Does it work setting it up the old school method, yes, but it's not optimal.

Well that is what I do for the most part. I set my spool just tight enough so there is no side to side. But I don't work down from 20 cause I've already dialed in the right brakes for what I do. Just a matter of wind where my brakes will be set between 2-8. Once I think I went to 10. But never needed to go higher.

So, I went fishing yesterday and the tatula ct R is a real beast, for 130 bucks I paid at the bay I am almost wondering why I bought other reels. The noise appears to have been caused by a loose spool tension knob, once I tightened it all I could here was gears working, and the feeling of smoothness and precision all over. Just wanted to report.

This is all I do as well.  Done it on every baitcaster I've ever owned on advice I got in this forum.

I just switched all my Curado Es for Tatula CTs.  I have to say I'm very impressed at this point.  They seem flawless and its nice to be able to fine tune the brakes with the Mag Z system.

I think the old Shimano VBS system was nice for those who like to set it and forget it.  But, Daiwa's Magforce Z allows you to get the cast exactly the way you want depending on conditions.

Can't comment on Shimano's new SVS infinity system - though, I will say that since its a Shimano I'm sure its great.
