Daiwa Magsealed Reels

I am looking at adding a Ballistic EX to my arsenal this year but I am happy about this feature and a little worried as well. For you guys who own the Magsealed reels are you able to service them at all on your own, do you have to send them into Daiwa for servicing, or are there any authorized service centers like could I send it to DVT?

Technically you have to send them back to Daiwa $25/reel for service which depending on how much you fish, once every 1-2 years. They will relube the bearings with the magseal oil. 

 

HOWEVER, DVT can definitely service them but will re lube the bearings with oil that isn't 'Magseal'. 

 

Do you have to use Mag seal?? No!

 

Could you?? Yes! 

 

Should you?? I would and do! 

 

Same ballpark pricing regardless who services them. 

 

I own 2 of those newer ballistics, fished them all 2016. Smooth as silk, and zero line twist issues. Haven't had them serviced yet either. ?? You'll definitely like them.

If you buy the US model (TW, EBay, local, etc.) then yes Daiwa USA. If you buy the JDM reel, which I don't even think it's ballistic I'm pretty sure it's another name/model all together, then you would have to find someone who does JDM reels.

 

personally, I know for a fact US Daiwa won't service any of my JDM reels.

Daiwa doesn't make the magseal oil available as far as I'm aware. The mag seal is a kinda cool extra feature but not do or die either way. Personally it wouldn't factor either way in my buying decisions.

I have two JDM Certates, both with mag sealed bearings. Neither gets used a lot, and haven't yet required service. When they do, the bearings will get the seals removed, and will be cleaned and lubed as I always do.

 

I'm ambivalent about this concept.Is it n actual benefit? Could very well be, long term. But, my options are to send it to Japan for servicing(not gonna happen), or service it myself, and defeat the mag seal. So, if there is any long term benefit, I'm not gonna see it.

The way I see it the magseal concept would benefit the "average " angler that isn't as hardcore as many of us. They buy a reel and use and abuse it right out of the box until it dies then puts it in a box and forgets about it.

That is a relief knowing I can service them the same way I do my Shimanos without issue.

Not sure how you service your Shimano bearings, but if you flush/re-oil a magsealed bearing it will no longer be "magsealed."

My advice is to just use the reel & forget servicing it until it presents a problem if ever. The factory sealed magnetic oil system is not meant to be serviced like a conventional constructed reel. I have several diawa certates which just keep running smooth without any servicing for multiple years. The mag sealed reels are an exception to reel service protocol based on the design.
