S. Sass Posted March 7, 2017 Posted March 7, 2017 Before anyone gets all crazy with Megabass is the only one we worship, I am just asking because not everyone wants to drop $25 on a single lure. I don't want to spend $10 either. OK so I was just looking through the suspending jerkbaits on Ebay and there are quite a few nice looking ones listed as KDS Custom Painted SUSPENDING 110 Jerkbait Vision The seller has a 99.9% Positive feedback but I wasn't going through all the feedback to see exactly what the feedback on these was. I did search for comments here at bassresource and searched the web for info/reviews on them but came up empty. Has anyone tried one to see what they are really like? 1 Quote

I agree there may be others at a better price but I did really like a few of the colors and I wanted suspending not floating. I usually do shop Academy online they have some pretty decent stuff. Also I didn't notice Academy Sports having anything close to this color. Quote

One problem with the Academy website, they often mislabel things, at least when it comes to fishing tackle. That jerkbait is labeled as floating, but is actually a suspending bait. The bait you're looking at from Ebay is just a 110 mm blank, probably from Predator or similar website, and then painted. They may be very nice, or if they don't get the right amount of paint and sealant on them, they might sink tail down, might float, you can't ever really tell. I have a bunch of custom 110 painted blanks that a friend does for me and they work very well. 4 Quote

Thanks for the information fellas. Quote
Mumbly Posted March 7, 2017 Posted March 7, 2017 I bought a few of the Academy Jerk Shad's and they are a great jerkbait. If you have a bit of patience they do put them on "Hot Deal" several times a year for $2.99. As was mentioned, their color selection is limited. I haven't fished a KDS bait so not sure how they perform but I just wanted to pass along that the suspending model is on sale for $3.99 on the KDS website. http://www.fishkds.com/apps/webstore/products/category/1504260 1 Quote

Ill probably just stop by Academy next visit to my daughters. No let me rephrase that I will stop at Academy as I always do, but this time I will check out the Ultimate Jerk Shads they have in stock. Thanks again for the input. 1 Quote
S. Sass Posted March 18, 2017 Author Posted March 18, 2017 Tried out the inexpensive KDS 110 Suspending jerkbaits. I bought three for $3.99 each to try and was quite surprised. They didn't suspend perfectly but they did work pretty good. The fish loved them. I only fished for about 3 hours and probably caught 30 under 14" long. I caught several that were close to 2lbs and one over 2 guessing close to three. Probably the biggest negative is the nice looking colors come off pretty easy. These started out very nice with no blemishes I could see. But as you can see after 1 outing and fished for just about an hour each they are pretty scared up. The blue/white one has little stickers that were reflective that are coming off. I didn't know they were stickers till they started coming off. The chrome one with the dark back is well just losing paint all over. Was thinking of trying to put a sealer on them to stop the deterioration of the paint. Anyone think clear nail polish would help? I'm not getting all crazy with a airbrush etc. Just thought I might could save the color a little longer. Quote
Super User Big Bait Fishing Posted March 18, 2017 Super User Posted March 18, 2017 checked them out right now on ebay and ordered the '' real shad '' color , since the paint is fragile , i'll take off the hardware and clear coat it with some urethane rattle can clear . 1 Quote

I use the Sally Hansen "Hard as Nails" to touch up spinnerbait and buzzbaits heads that get beat up and I apply it often. Although I will admit that beat up, paintless baits get bit as just as much. For what you want to do I would suggest the rattle can option that @Big Bait Fishingmentioned. Cleaner result with less effort. I use the Krylon in the pic below. Regardless of method, I'd like to see your results when done. 1 Quote
S. Sass Posted March 19, 2017 Author Posted March 19, 2017 @Mumbly Great thanks I'll see if a local store has the Krylon you mentioned. That is just Krylon'sns Colormaster clear right? Or is it a special clear I can't see a part/code#. And yeah I hear ya about ate up, paintless baits getting bit. But since Bass bite the pretty ones also I'd like to keep them looking decent for more than a week. Thanks for replying with the info. Ill gladly post pics when I get them repainted just dont laugh too hard. I can screw up a clear if anyone can. Quote

Code # 51301 I took a quick look on Krylon's website to be sure they still offered it and they do, although the can and description is a bit different. Either they added the primer or it's a US vs. Canada packaging difference. I am not sure but the code # is the same. It comes in satin and flat as well if you prefer those over the gloss. http://www.krylon.com/products/colormaster-paint-primer-acrylic-crystal-clear/ 1 Quote

I just know when I get in front of 50 variations of cans 10 of which will be some form of clear I would be scratching my head trying to make sure I got what you suggested. Thank you very much. 1 Quote

I haven't fished the 3 I bought in a while as I got four of the H2O Suspending baits along with other lures like 5 KVD 1.5 rattling squarebills, and a couple new Bomber Square A's. Along with some other new soft plastics just has be having to pick and choose what toys to play with. Quote

Super User J Francho Posted May 4, 2017 Super User Posted May 4, 2017 Why support knock off artists? Just fish the real deal. Hook rash just means it's a starter. 1 Quote

I've learned the hard way that I have little use for floating jerkbaits. I've got a number of them that I very rarely use. And, I've had so many cheaper 'suspending' jerkbaits that float...at least a slow rise still allows some jerking action....I don't see a need for one that is designed to float. I've got plenty of Rapalas and Smithwicks that cover that action for me. Quote

Super User J Francho Posted May 4, 2017 Super User Posted May 4, 2017 I rarely lose baits to northerns. I did have this one time where I lost three Slim Shads in a row, though. Most of the places I fish, the pike and bass don't intersect, but jerkbait season, they definitely do. I can feel you there. Quote
IndianaFinesse Posted May 4, 2017 Posted May 4, 2017 I wouldn't bother with the protective clear coat, but then again I love a beat up bait covered in scrapes and scratches from fish. Every scratch tells a story and brings back a memory. 1 Quote

Every scratch tells a story and brings back a memory. I completely understand that perspective. But these are in my opinion in need of some protection. They are extremely easy to scratch from anything. To me any length of time in a Plano box they would have nearly no paint. 1 Quote
