SmallmouthBoss Posted March 6, 2017 Posted March 6, 2017 These are great! Thought I'd pick up some of the wraps after handling my brothers Lews that had them on it. They aren't too thick so they don't add a lot of bulk to the existing grips. They're very grippy, soft, and just feel right in my hand. The small 44" pack was just enough to do these four rods. I wasn't going to do the spinning rod but didn't know what else to do with the leftover strip. Just a tip, electrical tape works better for taping off the ends then the little tape strips that come with the grips. Quote
Super User fishnkamp Posted March 7, 2017 Super User Posted March 7, 2017 Wait till you fish a rod that has the real grips. I had my friend, a custom rod builder, strip a defective reel seat and complete cork handle off a G Loomis IMX SJR 721( a 6 foot light action spinning rod). He removed all of the cork and the defective reel seat and installed the new Winn Grips in "natural color" The reel seat we picked was an American Tackle Comfort seat. The rod is lighter and more sensitive. I liked it sop much i had him do the same thing to a perfectly good G Loomis SJR 722, a medium action 6 foot IMX rod. 1 Quote

Super User smalljaw67 Posted March 7, 2017 Super User Posted March 7, 2017 I have a Hammer rod that has Winn Grips and I have to tell you, they are extremely comfortable and provide great grip. So far I haven't heard anything really negative on the regular Winn Grips but I have heard that the wraps have had some issues. Quote
Airman4754 Posted March 7, 2017 Posted March 7, 2017 I have two custom builds with Winn Grips and I really like them so far. I'm interested to see how they hold up over the long haul, but so far so good! Quote
Super User .ghoti. Posted March 7, 2017 Super User Posted March 7, 2017 Ive built a couple of rods with Winn grips. The one I built for myself has wrinkled in a fairly short time. Not liking that much. There is a lot to like about them. Very comfortable, good grip when wet, really nice in cold weather, very light weight. I recently spoke to some golfers who use them, and they all said the same thing. Great grips, but they need regular replacement. Granted, golfers grip their clubs much harder than we grip our rods. But, if the golfers have to replace grip every other year, and in some cases every year, how long are they going to last on a fishing rod? I have stopped using them until, that question is answered. Super User NYWayfarer Posted March 7, 2017 Super User Posted March 7, 2017 I have a cork grip rod that got a hook hole in it that eventually developed into a crack. I did a homemade repair job with wood glue and cork shavings. I was considering getting one of these Winn rod grips to cover the entire cork as an extra measure of protecting the cracked portion. It would also serve as a cosmetic cover-up as the patched up part is noticeable. Quote
Super User fishnkamp Posted March 7, 2017 Super User Posted March 7, 2017 I have a friend that fishes he Potomac and Upper Bay at least 3 or 4 times a year. He fishes a lot of Winn Grips and has had no trouble at all. I guess time will tel,l but I sorta use him as a torture tester of equipment.. If it survives him for a year it should survive for a decade for me. LOL I really like the light weight and tacky feeling they have. Quote
DaveT63 Posted March 7, 2017 Posted March 7, 2017 I tried the wrap tape on one of my rods with a thinner handle to try to increase the handle thickness. The feel was good, but even wrapping tight and taping the ends, the tape moved and wrinkled in relatively short time. The adhesive on the back, at least on the tape I had, was not very strong at all. I ended up taking it off, and doubling up the heat shrink wrap you have on the lower end of the spinning handle. I really like the way that feels. Quote
blckshirt98 Posted March 7, 2017 Posted March 7, 2017 Winn grips on golf clubs feel amazing, and if their fishing grips are identical I'm sure I'll like them. However I'm hesitant because I can see how fast the Winn grips wear down (my brother has some of his golf irons wrapped with Winn) and I can see them wearing down on a fishing rod that can regularly be held for hours at a time.
