ErikmonBillsfon Posted March 5, 2017 Posted March 5, 2017 Sorry for the long questions but i have faith in yalls knowledge and respect this community. So I just got a brand new abu garcia orra winch on sale. I wanted a low speed reel to round out my arsenal I'm building this spring. Now this is my first year using baitcasters and I plan on using them 95% of the time to help me learn. So far I love using a baitcaster. Now I just realized this reel is designed for deep cranking. I never use a crank. Maybe square bills and jerk baits in spring but by early May there is too much weed growth. I want to use this reel for a specialized use and I trust you guys. Now that being said I throw a lot of small swimbaits or paddle tails. Mostly kietechs and occasional bladed jigs. Will this low speed reel work well for slow rolling swimbaits? I recently got a bunch of glide baits and smaller end swimbaits such as the ganteral jr, savage gear glide, S-waver, line thru trout and I'm wondering if I can dedicate the reel towards these smaller swimbaits. Does winch mean more power or am I an idiot. I also have a tatula HD I was thinking of making the "swimbait" reel but was considering it for frogs. Sorry if this is too many questions but I appreciate any response and thanks again TL DR I've only ever used (all purpose) spinning gear, what should I use this ABU Winch for if I'm not going throw cranks. Super User Big Bait Fishing Posted March 5, 2017 Super User Posted March 5, 2017 the orra winch will be great for swimbaits as you'll be able to put a good amout of 15-20 lb. line on it . for square bill crankbats i perfer a 6.4:1 gear ratio as i like to fish them a tad faster than deep diving crankbaits which a 5.4:1 gear ratio is more perfered/ 1 Quote
CTBassin860 Posted March 5, 2017 Posted March 5, 2017 I used to use mine for frogging and never had an issue Quote
Super User iceintheveins Posted March 6, 2017 Super User Posted March 6, 2017 Great for slow rolling spinnerbaits, or even slow topwaters except for frogs. A five ratio reel is more versatile than people give them credit for. The only things they don't do well are frogs, flippin/pitchin, and buzzbait type lures. A 6 ratio reel does everything adequately except deep cranking, but I still have plenty of 5 and 7 reels. Quote

I used it for a frog reel for 2 seasons.I thoroughly disagree with this. While faster may be better for frogging,I never had a problem with that application. Quote
DINK WHISPERER Posted March 6, 2017 Posted March 6, 2017 Back when i had one it handled swimbait duties just fine. Quote
Super User Jrob78 Posted March 6, 2017 Super User Posted March 6, 2017 I would use it for most moving baits. Quote
