Hey guys! I am getting my gear ready for this spring and have one last rod I would like to put together. I have recently purchased some soft paddle tail swimbaits(gambler big ez) and some luckycraft smasher and big smasher hard swimbaits. I am looking for a suggestion on line and gear ratio to set up a swimbait rod, possibly looking to purchase a new reel. I have a 7' Kistler Magnesium 2 MH Fast Action rod I was planning on using. Any suggestions?

You'll be fine with most average sized baitcasters for those baits. I'd suggest something with a 6 gear ratio.

Line will depend where you fish them. The hard baits are more open water baits but the Big EZ is a popular bait to fish through grass, where you'll want braid. If you're not fishing around grass, something like 15lb Big Game would be fine.

6.3:1 Curado I or a 6.3:1 Tatula CT would be my recommendation. keep in mind the Tatula CT might be a little small for thick swimbait lines. (I would check it out in person before buying it).

I just got both and the Diawa spool is much smaller than the curado so I got the Curado for flipping with braid  and the CT for moving baits that I use FC on

For the past several years I have a casting outfit dedicated solely to the 'Gambler Big EZ'
It would take at least 3 strong men to wrestle it away from me   :Sumo:

Please bear two thoughts in mind:

    (1) Most of our fishing is in dense spatterdock             (Lily pads held above the water surface)

    (2) We're dealing solely with Florida-strain bass         (Few or no intergrade-bass south of Ocala)

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

ROD:   Dobyns Champion 705C        (7'0" | Mag Heavy | Fast Action)
REEL:  Shimano Core 101MG            (6.2:1 ratio | 6.1 oz | 101 = left-hand | MG = magnesium)
LINE:  30-lb Braided Polyethylene     (No leader of course)

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If I were still dealing with northern-strain bass, I would opt instead for a Dobyns Champion 704C

I use my daiwa advantage htsl for this in 6.3:1.  It is a tank and has been going strong for years.  You can find them cheap and they are a great reel.  Another great option would be a zillion any version you like.
